Reflection Of My Heritage Culture

My heritage culture is what has shaped me into who I am today. I am a Caucasian female who is twenty-three years old. I am a granddaughter, daughter, sister, and friend. I am a Christian, and more specifically a Baptist. I attend Musella Baptist Church in Musella, Georgia. My ethnicity is a blend of Cherokee and English. Along with my family and who I am particular experiences have opened my eyes to the other cultures’ practices. Additionally, witnessing the diverse cultures has allowed me to become a more accepting of others’ differences. Through my own family’s culture, beliefs, and experiences I have become more aware of the diversity that surrounds me. One particular experience that has truly opened my eyes to a culture that is diverse would be when I attended a church of all African Americans. As the church was very local to mine, I expected things would be similar, however my assumption was wrong. When I got there everything seemed normal as others greeted and talked with one another as they found their seats. Once the music cued to start worship all normality that I knew vanished. At my church we stand, sing, sit down, and quietly listen. At this church during worship they shouted, sang loudly, danced, clapped, and moved around. At this point I was confused and surprised at the same time as to what to do. I would look around trying to decide do I join in or do I just stand by. Although this experience of a different culture I thoroughly enjoyed their passion and fun that they incorporated into worship. Throughout my research, family values, and experiences I will be able to be accepting and understanding of the culturally diverse children that I may have in my classroom. To make my classroom a welcoming and safe environment for those who are different I want to incorporate their culture into projects, lessons and crafts.
