The following paper is written based on the video “When Kids Get Life”. The video explains three major cases that hit the news across the country. The writer expresses the views of why the United States has an inflated number of juveniles sentence to life. The writer looks at the Colorado justice system and how it has become harsh against juveniles in the past years and why. The juvenile justice system was improved however; it only benefitted the victim’s and prosecution when it comes to trial and the transfer of the case to adult court. The cases that are presented in this video only show victims of crimes that were committed on the juvenile offenders in the writer’s opinion. The offenders in these cases were sexual abused, tormented, and victims of assailants that helped commit the murders. Unfortunately, they did not follow up on Jacob which ended in the gruesome murder of both parent 2 months later. At the age of 8 months a witness stated that she saw the mother verbally abusing Jacob. The brother of Jacob felt that his mother blamed Jacob for her failures in life and hated him. The brother also felt that in the back of their mother’s mind she had to know that the step-father was sexually and psychically abusing them.
Jacob at the time of the murder was unaware of the intensity of the crime that he had committed. He had stated he was more worried about the weed in his room and school homework while they were trying him for 1st degree murder. He basically had no concept of what was happening to him or how much pain it had caused anyone else. The brother felt that it was a painful trial and no justice was shown for his brother. Jacob was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the murders of his mother and
