Five issues in my community are environmental neglect, hunger, lack of elderly care, the need for hospital assistance, and need of disaster/shelter volunteers. The two that interest me the most are environmental neglect and hunger.

What type of service might be most helpful to people affected by the issue?
People not caring about dropping litter, locations without proper disposal, and trash disposal not properly secured. A lack of public recycling bins and industrial waste also contribute to the problem. People can stop dropping litter, dispose of garbage properly, clean up the litter they see, and advocate for harsher punishments for littering.(Singapore is so clean for a reason.) Businesses can reduce the waste produced. Cleanups and waste reduction workshops might be the most helpful.
Insufficient income, high rent/mortgage expenses, too many mouths to feed, etc. People can donate food, stop wasting food, and join campaigns improve the issue. Feeding those affected and somehow helping them out of poverty would be most helpful to people affected by the issue.

When are related plans or events scheduled?
As urbanization and industrialism became more and more common, production and populations increased, with it the amount of trash produced. In Burlington County, a fall cleanup is planned with several dates to clean up the parks.
The current issue is at least partly caused by the recession. Hunger in America stretches back to the 1960s. Where I live, a group from my conference goes to Camden or Trenton and sets up a soup kitchen. The county has its own soup kitchen system, there is an annual Thanksgiving dinner for the community, and my church does a food bank. All these events/institutions are meant to deal with the hunger issue.
