How do the references change over the course of the story? In the story “The Minister’s Black Veil” the references toward the veil have negative, neutral, and positive impacts. In the beginning of the story the veil received a lot of controversy and negative feedback from the townspeople; however, when the veiled minister goes to a funeral only brief and neutral conversations pass between the mourners. Positive references toward the veil came only from the ministers optimistic fiancee. Instead of gossiping with townspeople, his fiancee went to the source of the controversy. The first sight of the veil had many confused, unsure, hesitant and uneasy making for a lot of held back uncertainties waiting to be talked about between others with the same feelings. Causing for a lot of negative assumptions between the townspeople about the veil “At the close of the services, the people hurried out with indecorous confusion, eager to communicate their pent-up amazement, and conscious of lighter spirits the moment they lost sight of the black veil.” (98-101).
