Redemption is a matter of honor. Throughout the book True Grit, redemption is best demonstrated through three characters. These main characters compensate for their faults and salvage others lives. The book True Grit further shows, even the worst people can redeem themselves. Rooster Cogburn is a deputy marshal for the U.S District Court for the Western District of Arkansas. Rooster is a drunk and a war criminal that has a lot of “grit.” He at no time thought twice before pulling a trigger. Rooster is exactly the guy Mattie Ross wants to avenge her father's death. Rooster redeems himself after he leaves Mattie when she was being held hostage. While Rooster navigates drunk, he leads LaBoeuf and Mattie way to close to where Lucky Ned Pepper and his gang is. The important thing was not to lose sight of my object and that was to get Tom Chaney.” Earlier in the story, While Rooster is drunk, he loads Mattie’s gun. He did it wrong and this lead to it misfiring. While Mattie is held hostage Rooster leaves her. Lucky Ned Pepper and his gang leave Tom Chaney and Mattie alone, knowing Tom was presumably going to kill her. We know this because Lucky Ned Pepper says to Rooster “she was in great health the last time I saw her” as he is coming back to save her. Rooster is in a stand down with Lucky Ned Pepper and his gang. This was like the story he told while he was a war criminal and charged at officers, he charged at Lucky Ned Pepper and his gang with full force. He shoots Lucky Ned Pepper’s gang, but The Original Greaser Bob gets away. Rooster’s horse is shot from underneath him by Lucky Ned Pepper and Rooster is pinned under his horse on the ground. He knows he is going to die as Lucky Ned Pepper stands over him with a pistol in his hand. Towards the end of the book, Rooster gets the redemption he needs.
