People cannot understand something if they have not experienced it.. When Henry has just joined the army, he does not know anything and thinks he is almost a hero. However, once he is well into the war he finally understands he is tiny and has no real power. In Red Badge of Courage, Stephen Crane shows that people’s experience drives their understanding.

Henry lacks experience and will not understand war until he steps into battle but until then he will be childish and curious. Crane frequently anthropomorphizes the natural world and turns it into an agent actively working against the survival of man. But the few moments in Crane's stories where individuals rise above self-preservation are not the typically heroicized moments of battle. Gray, for example, describes both the literal image of a dead soldier and Henry Fleming’s vision of the sleeping soldiers as corpses and comes to stand for the idea of death. In the same way, red describes both the soldiers’ physical wounds and Henry’s mental vision of battle.
