Though cultures have many differences there have been a few traits that have united them across the spans of time and geographical area. Many of these traits have even been included in religious doctrine or social and moral laws. In western philosophy and religions the concept of respect has help a high place, allowing a clear distinction between those who have experience and answers to those who are young and naïve. Religions such as Christianity and Mormonism stress greatly that the young should respect the elderly, while the Judaic religion provides a strict consequence, should this command be broken. By Old Testament law, the disrespectful child was to be taken to the town council, and then promptly stoned to avoid the spread of the sin and to keep ?God?s Chosen? pure.
In recent times the respect that teenagers have shown for the elderly has decreased significantly, this trend has become extremely apparent in the 1980?s and 90?s. There are many crimes committed by teenagers every year. Crimes that are committed by teens each year are mainly assault, bullying, gang violence, and physical fights. According to National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center, about 1 and 9 murders are from kids that are under 18 (Center, 2001). In 1998, there were approximately 2,570 among youth aged 10-19. While many argue that juveniles who commit serious crimes, such as murder, should be treated as adults, the fact is, juveniles under the age of eighteen, are not adults, and should not be treated as such. Juveniles are not mature enough or developed psychologically, and, therefore, do not consider the consequences of their actions. In the article, “Startling Finds on Teenage Brains” by Thompson, the writer argues that juveniles are not adults. Their brains develop at different stages and they learn skills that they need to learn at a certain time.
Very few youth of today have respect for teachers, elders, or each other. Everyday more and more instances of violent crime are committed by our nation’s youth and children. Shocking accounts of children bringing guns to school as a means of solving problems with a teacher or a fellow student are becoming increasingly frequent. Children are committing crime, which were one thought only committed by adults such as rape, robbery, and murder.
Adolescence is an emotionally difficult time where young people often seek unique and varied life experiences. I am sure there will be many people who will say if they are mature enough to commit murder, they are mature enough to suffer the consequences. Studies on development suggest that impulsive behaviors are exacerbated around the time an individual tums sixteen years old, and often continue through age nineteen and sometimes beyond. Death by incarceration, like death by execution, denies juveniles the opportunity to mature and earn forgiveness for their transgressions. The Adolescence is typically punctuated by a "frequency and means of expression of violence and other risky behaviors." Adolescents often fear being socially ostracized for refusing to engage in risky behavior more so than adults. One problem with the large number of studies focusing on attitudes about risk is their failure to address the role of emotion in evaluating cognitive processes. My culture respects the people and the things that deserve it, but with that said, we also don’t give respect to the people who don’t deserve it. We don’t just respect anyone or anything neither, they have to earn that valuable thing that most people don’t have nor give anymore. This is probably one of the biggest differences between my culture and my society because in my society people don’t know the first thing about respect. The way i see it is that it really is a shame of how my society and these people that live in it can’t show even a little bit of respect for someone or something, big or small. Respect is one of the dying characteristics in this world and my culture has the last of it.
Research supports that teenager’s brains are not fully developed compared to adult brains. Teenagers do not have the same life experience, knowledge, or decision making skills that adults generally have. Many teenagers will commit acts that will not accurately resemble their values when they are older, and as such they should not be punished in a way that would affect them their whole life. Lets start by understanding that cultures are a melting pot of people’s beliefs, language, behaviors, values, material objects, and norms. Norms are written and non-written “expectations of behavior” that govern a certain location, place, or culture (26). These norms also vary from culture to culture meaning what is a norm in the U.S may not be a norm in India. For example, a norm in America would be tipping a waiter after a meal. Another would be acknowledging someone as you walk past him or her, typically done at work or in a public place. In all, norms are folkways, mores, taboos, and written laws that are an established standard of one’s behavior.
Violent media influence on the attitudes and behaviour of young people has been a hot topic of debate for decades. Critics say that violence in television, movies, and video games, desensitizes children to real effects that violence has on society and themselves. The problem is that teenagers tend to act on the behaviour seen in the television shows they watch and the video games they play every day. They shoot someone in a video game and not be able to distinguish that it is morally wrong to kill someone but to influence every day it does not affect them and they will grow up and be a savage. This subject is debated because of the profound effect that violence can in the future of society. The introduction of television violence has led many to theorize that chronic exposure to the act will desensitize some teenagers and cause them to develop the characteristics of a more aggressive.

Firstly, everyone has gone or will go through the teenage rebellion phase. No matter how good of a person you think you are, you have probably rebelled against an elder person at least once. Once hormones have revealed it-self, children turn into confused young adults that think they can do everything by themselves and that there will be no longer any need of nurture from adults. The word “young” from “Young adults” are what teenagers completely ignore, when actually they should do the opposite and ignore the “adults” part.
Many people wish to place the blame for any increase in youth aggression solely on the violence in the media to which they are exposed. There have been many examinations into how violence in media can adversely affect childhood development, increase hostility and promote undesirable behavior. Yet, historically, there has always been violence throughout human development including abuse by parents to which children have been subjected. People are exposed to a multitude of personal experiences which shape them as they grow to adulthood. Taking individual experiences into account is thus imperative when attempting to assign blame from any outside stimuli. Most studies found on this subject rarely take into account individual or environmental factors in the adolescent and preadolescent stages. The studies almost never examine the benefits that media, violent or otherwise, can offer during childhood development, but focus on the negatives. Children, who can be some of the more vicious beings on the planet, can also be the most giving.
