"Realism in, art and literature, [is] an attempt to describe human behavior and surroundings or to represent figures and objects exactly as they act or appear in life" (Realism 1). During the 1840's through the 1890's realism was present in much of the literature from the United Sates and Europe. It has been said that realism is easily visible in many pieces of modern literature and even in present day films. In 2001, the movie Training Day was released into theaters. Many critics agreed that the movie was very realistic. In fact, the main actor Denzel Washington was presented with an academy award for his performance in Training Day. Training Day can be considered realistic, but many aspects of the film show little realism.
The movie, Training Day, demonstrates how some police officers take advantage of their positions which is realistic. Mikkelsen states that, ?The new movie Training Day is an excellent fictional demonstration of how the State, in this case the police, provide a ?legalized channel for crime? (Mikkelsen 1).? It is hard to define the line between doing the right thing and doing the wrong thing to stop a crime. As Mikkelson explains, ?Many of the events are to be expected: violence against suspects, confiscation and use of drugs and especially money, violations of due process, graft (Mikkelsen 1).? At the end of the movie the main character is murdered and the police department makes up a story venerating his death in a positive manner. In all truth Harris was murdered by the Russians because he lost his temper and killed someone who was ?talking trash? about him. This is shown when Mikkelsen says, ?The state must defend cops, when possible, because publicity about ?bad cops? does not reflect well o...

...od and bad in life. Training Day scripted too much negativity into a movie that took place over only one day, and that is why it is not realistic.

...lue was going on. The way our police have adapted these aggressive and violent tactics of Mr. Balko showed us how both liberals and conservatives have allowed the militarization of our police forces to flourish In our country. The police and military are very different even in the way they conduct their raids, a lot much safer compared to police how is less accountable than the military and a lot less disciplined than the military. After read this book I would more likely not be able to work because I see the point and I can see its not heading in a good direction. These Para military tactics are something that really isn’t a big deal now but it will soon becoming a big deal. Not all police officers are bad like Mr. balko say’s. There are very good police officers in the United States but polices have elevated police over the people they are supposed to be serving.

Officers are known as public servants, they are held at higher standards than everyday citizens. According to Wyatt-Nichol & Franks(2009) when officers behave unethically, it is a violation of public trust and damages the image of law enforcement everywhere (p. 40). Officer should receive in-death training of cases that make headlines within the newspapers or media. For example, the Freddie Gray or Eric Garner case could be used in scenarios with the steps taken to avoid any ethical dilemmas they could possibly run into. Updated training should be conducted every 6 months for ethics alone in addition to the yearly training that’s already in place. The civilian review board can recommend more training of officers that engage in unethical behavior or misconduct. Intense training, followed through with morals is important factors to avoiding the civilian review board and their process in reviewing investigations against officers. When all training officers receive has been overlooked and failed to comply. Police officers should be held accountable for their actions, through training officers learn to understand their position and need within the community. Although training is offered yearly and on an as need basics, officers are held to a high standard within their community. Some tend to lose sight of their mission of daily duties which are to maintain order and
...an also affect the integrity of a department. The book states that “if the police culture influences the level of police misconduct, it is important to change it” (Pollock 208) This culture can lead officers to believe that what others are doing is ok, and, that in turn, makes it okay for them to do it also. These views and actions can be changed by a change in supervision or by taking ethics classes.
When we think of the police, we normally think of the brave men and women out on the street, enforcing the law, catching criminals, helping out the public in cases of emergency and making us feel safe in general. Most of the Police in most of the world is like that which is a good thing, However in the United States of America the police here are a bit more ruthless. Most of the police officers are very nice people and they really do want to help out in their community, but unfortunately there are some bad and corrupt cops in the system that will break the law and do some bad things. In the Modern world most bad cops are seen as racist and trigger happy. They don’t kill for fun of course but whenever they feel threatened they are trained to
By teaching police officers alternatives to shooting to kill, they experience higher risks with their lives. Police Commissioner, Ray Kelly, said, “It would be "very difficult" to train officers to shoot to wound” (Jacobo, 2016). Police officers are viewed as “predators” and “an occupying army” rather than allies (Valey, 2016). This is a perception that needs to change because it counteracts the mission of police officers
The negative views of everyday people often make work hard for officers, adding more stress to their careers. The general public regularly criticizes officers for using excessive force and brutality, especially when a police officer ends up killing a suspect or criminal. Oftentimes, especially when a white police officer shoots a citizen of a minority race, the general public is quick to find faults in the officer, blaming the officer for being racist. However, cold, hard statistics show that the majority of police officers are, in fact, white, and the neighborhoods in which these officers are placed in tend to be high-crime areas with many minority citizens living there (Miller “When Cops Kill”). In addition, people might say that a citizen who was shot was not armed; however, almost anything close to the shot individual could have been turned into a deadly weapon that he or she could have used to wound or kill the officer involved. Whenever officers are in this position, the natural reaction is to defend themselves. Everyday, police officers confront the most aggressive, immoral, and sick-minded individuals of society. Officers jeopardize their own lives every time they report for work. Officers witness things that no person should ever have to encounter. They see the most horrific and gruesome scenes that the general public turns away from and
As elucidated above, William Bratton successfully engages the audience in thinking about the possibility of having responsible cops and a functional police department. He does so by explaining and revealing how new strategies changed the entire operations of the NYPD and other police departments in America. Though not flawless, the book is fascinating, informing and interesting for learners and law enforcers.
As taught in the lectures, it is impossible for police officers to win the war against crime without bending the rules, however when the rules are bent so much that it starts to violate t...

...niversity of Alabama who’s only contribution to the article is a statement about how he plays the game by eliminating all resistance (Bradley). The significance of this source is negligible because it only shows how one person chooses to play instead of how the game is meant to be played. Bradley’s report, however, does consider the reactions of the police force and the general public. An unnamed police officer tells Bradley that he worries that kids now have the “preconceived notions of ‘let’s kill an officer’.” This emotional appeal to the parents of children playing this game is almost a hit below the belt. The use of an officer of the law to further strengthen his argument that this game is the cause of the killings of other officers is a clever manipulation of the emotions that Bradley has crafted for the readers to feel up to this point in his article.
The movie “Training Day” is a simple motif of good cop vs. bad cop. When rookie cop Jake Hoyt, Ethan Hawke, who is escorted by Alonzo Harris played by Denzel Washington through the city of Los Angeles to train his way as a narcotic unit. As the movie progresses Jakes impression of Alonzo was not the idea of being ‘hard’ on the streets, but a sense of corruption, where Jakes attempt to figure out what is justice and what crosses the line in order to protect the community.
For years police corruption has been a major problem in American society but where is the line between moral and unethical police corruption, many modern movies address this vary issue. Some films portray how types of police corruption can have a positive influence on society, while others show the dark side of police corruption. Many law enforcement agents join the criminal justice with the basic idea of “justice for all,” however, most of them do not realize that the nice guy doesn’t always win. Even though there are vast amounts of movies which specifically address police corruption we will use three main movies for our argument today, mostly LA Confidential, however, also Training Day.
Overall, Training Day proved to send a powerful message and gave us a small glimpse of what is truly happening in our society. The film shows the effects that drugs and violence are having in our cities. Training Days takes us into world of crime where corruption is happening among our most trusted police officers.
