Recommended: Bias in the judicial system

In the case of Cass Vs. Marner, regarding the custody of the minor child, Hepzibah; the court has ruled full custody to the biological father, Godfrey Cass. Godfrey Cass has been a consistent figure in the child Hepzibah’s life despite his mistakes and proven himself worthy. When in time is water thicker than blood; no man has the god given right to keep a loving father from his own child. The jury has come to the decision that it is to be in the best interest of the child to live with the biological father despite the deep emotional ties that bind said child to the only father it has ever known, Silas Marner.

Silas Marner moved to Raveloe fifteen years previous as a lone miser known for his mysterious ways; dealing with epilepsy at the time and sorcery. It is well known throughout the town of Raveloe that Master Marner is known for his ‘fits’, believed to be an interval of the soul leaving the owners body to communicate with Satan himself. The narrator’s attitude changes drastically towards the character from altering his ideas of the kind and intelligent persona to an evil being by using phrases such as “haunted by Satan himself” (101). The narrator portrays the people of the town believing Chillingworth is taking over the ministers soul in the statement “the gloom and terror in the depths of the poor minister’s eyes” (102). Throughout the book, Chillingworth ages exceedingly and rapidly. At the very end of the story, the narrator reveals another change in Chillingworth’s character; he searches for redemption by leaving Pearl a fortune a “very considerable amount of property” (203).
