Those boys aren’t the only ones who rape girls at college. There are many factors as to why boys in fraternities rape girls. One reason is the use of alcohol is used as a weapon against women to take advantage of them. Also, the fraternities’ members are told to stick together regardless of right or wrong, which is a cause of why gang rape happens. The boys in fraternities commonly have an obsession with competing against other fraternities and among each other. For example, having sex with women rather is being rape or not is a rivalry to see who can have sex with the most or hottest girls on campus. Two former Vanderbilt football players face the possibility of decades in prison. Corey Batey and Thomas Thurman were the two perpetrators that were captured raping a woman on video that had done viral. Corey Batey was known to be a hard drinker and had many easy hook ups at Vanderbilt University, in which he violated the in multiple ways and urinated on her. The other perpetrator was Brandon Vandenburg, who briefly dated the woman who was raped. Brandon was “not accused of touching the woman sexually, but was found guilty for being the ringleader, gave condoms and egged others on, voice heard on video, instructing them, and laughing” (Blinder, Alan, and Richard PÉrez-peÑa). Security camera images found the men carrying an unconscious woman into a dormitory room. “Several people knew of the assault, but failed to report it” (Blinder, Alan, and Richard PÉrez-peÑa), therefore bystanders need to speak up to consequent the perpetrators. Then I used information from my criminology class to better define violent crime . Lastly, I explained how rape on campuses is not a cultural component. Performing rape accidentally, or knowingly I do agree with Yoffe’s statement “Let’s be totally clear: Perpetrators are the ones responsible for committing their crimes.” In Yoffe’s article she covers both the perpetrator as well as the victim, though spending more time on the latter. Sexual assault, abuse, and rape by athletes is a devastating crime. These crimes by themselves are horrendous, but when committed by athletes there are many different factors involved. Through extensive research this paper will show contributing factors that may result in assault, abuse, or rape by athletes. Special treatment for athletes throughout their career, belief in sexual male dominance, and the role of alcohol are all important factors. Other crucial factors are the attitudes and responses of: society, juries, victims, coaches, and athletes. This paper will explore all these issues and show that changes need to be made in all the areas to combat the growing percentages of sport assault, abuse, and rape against women.

Or in another study reported in the “The sexual Victimization of College Women” there are 35.3 incidents of sexual assault in a group of 1,000 women in a time span of 6.91 months (Statistics). Obviously sexual assault is a huge problem that should be taken very seriously. Some colleges have wonderful programs put in place that provides great services to help those students who have been have been sexually assaulted and programs that help education and prevent sexual assault.

Spade analyze the social perspective of the gendered relations in male fraternities that add to the high rate of violence against women on many college campuses. They list a host of factors that distinguish higher-risk from lower-risk atmospheres discussing the rates of rape in colleges and state how "1 out of 4 college women say they were raped or experienced an attempted rape" (217). Additionally, "1 out of 12 college men say they forced a woman to have sexual intercourse against her will" (Boswell, Spade 217). In other words Boswell and Spade indicated that the rates were high when it came down to women getting raped in colleges by men who also attended those colleges. Before applying to these accredited institutions most students do not look up the school 's past records of sexual assault and rape on their campus.College campuses have failed to keep students safe the system they use has failed to protect and obtain justice for those that have been victims of sexual assault. Society plays a huge part in how young adults view sexual assault. From young age girls are told “if he’s bothering you it 's because he likes you”, and boys aren 't held accountable for their actions because “boys will be boys”. At what time does it stop being a game. At what age is it not acceptable for boys to mistreat girls, when is the line drawn and, what is the punishment for when this line is crossed.

Sexual assault is far too common and it is an epidemic that faces many students in college. Many students suffer from the consequences of sexual assault, which is a result of many social and cultural deficiencies, but it can be fixed through a multifaceted approach. The problem of sexual assault can be fixed through the education of the community, a positive and helpful school environment, and classes focused on prevention.
