In the book Lord of the Flies there is a main leader, his name is Ralph. He was chosen to be leader because of his great appearance and he was the one who blew the conch. Ralph is bright and athletic. The theme of this book is basically civilization vs. savagery. Ralph was trying to lead the path of civilized survival until, or if they were going to get rescued. He ended up being naive about that though. Some of the boys were cruel, some where scared, some where just trying to survive. I like Ralph because he put up with all of the boys. Piggy was annoying at times and Ralph dealt with it in the best of ways, even if he was fed up with it all. He said “Cause Ive got since” (Golding) , his motivations were mainly getting to a civilized course of being rescued and surviving. He constantly told the boys about keeping fire going until rescue comes, shelters must be built, and they must find food, as chief were Ralph orders. The novel, Lord of the Flies, is a compelling story displaying the metamorphosis of an individual when faced with external and internal conflicts. Ralph is the first character to be introduced in the book. He is the most likeable as he is charming, athletic, and displays strong leadership qualities. However, as the novel progresses, Ralph loses his sense of civilization and undergoes a change in character discovering the evil man is capable of. Ralph’s metamorphosis is captivating and displays the inevitable loss of innocence.
Ralph was starting to notice all the differences between night and day. He realized his choices don't only have an affect on that moment but affect every moment after it. Ralph was very scared and for a moment he thought Piggy should be chief. “He could go step by step inside that fat head os his only Piggy was no chef. But Piggy for all his ludicrous body had brains.”(78) As Ralph was starting to question if he was fit to be chief he thought of Piggy and how intelligent he is. Although Piggy is intelligent he doesn't have the ‘look’ to be a chief. Today's society has a specific way of thinking we want our leader to look like a leader. With Piggy's intelligent mind he knows how the boys should live but they don't like to think that way and Piggy was not happy about what they were becoming.Piggy decided to tell the boys how he felt and thought about them in a rhetorical way. “‘Which is better to be a pack of painted indians like you are or to be sensible like ralph is?...which is better--to have laws and agree or to hunt and kill?’” (180) Piggy didn't change his mindset from the beginning of the book to the end. He believed that they needed rules and laws. Ralph’s character has changed from the beginning of the book to the end. In the beginning of Lord of the Flies he is good at delegation, gets very impatient with the younger boys who play instead of help, and he feels the need to be in control but doesn’t always know how to do it. He is also good with dealing with personalities. For example with Jack wanted to be the leader, so Ralph let him be the leader of the hunters. In a group, there are always people who prove to have better leadership skills then others. The strongest of these people can often influence the weaker people into following them. However, the strongest person is not necessarily the best leader as it is proven in William Golding's book, The Lord of the Flies. Although Ralph is the weaker person, he is still able to show a better understanding of people than Jack who is stronger. Ralph demonstrates his excellent leadership skills throughout the book by keeping the group in line, treating everyone with respect, and staying focused on getting rescued.
Although, Piggy and Jack have some leadership qualities, Ralph is the best leader. This is shown all throughout the novel, Lord of the Flies, by Williams Golding. Piggy is portrayed as the wisest of them all and understands priorities; however he lacks confidence from time to time. This makes him a good leader but not the best. Jack on the other hand, is egotistic but has his good qualities as well, such as knowledge and courage. This makes him a potential leader like Piggy, but not the best. Ralph however shows the most positive qualities of being a leader. He is optimistic, committed and knows his priorities, thus making him the best leader on the island. From the day we were born, we were governed by a set of rules that influenced our behaviour. Would the story have been different if civilization was maintained on the island?
In the book, Lord of the Flies, Ralph is an elected leader of the boys and the main protagonist because he was the one of the person who gathered all the kids into one place with Piggy. He is not smartest or strongest but has a charisma and good looks and he tries to make the boys to be focused on his order and rules of civilization but he loses his authority. He was proud of his father and like his father he thought he can lead the kids and survive from the island so he said “my father’s in the Navy. He said there aren’t any unknown island left.”
In literature, as in life, people struggle with the principles and beliefs they hold. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, Ralph represents order, civilization, and leadership. On the island, Ralph is conflicted with his principles and beliefs that he has acquired over the years of living in a civilized and humane world and is caught between holding on to them or submitting to the barbarism that seems to have taken over the other boys.
In Chapter 8 Jack says “He’s like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn’t a proper chief.” He says this because Jack thinks his point of view is the right one, and it can only be the right one. This is similar to dictatorships in the past when people believe their right and anyone who doesn’t agree is the enemy. Later in the book Jack tries to get more followers by promising them psychological needs. Jack states “We’ve killed a pig and we’ve got meat. You can come and eat with us if you like.” Jack is trying to take away any of Ralph’s remaining supporters, so that Ralph is forced to follow him when all he has left is Piggy, Samneric, and a few clueless littluns. Later in this book Ralph is on his own a few hours after Piggy dies, he is considering joining Jack’s tribe because he will have food and protection. In the forest he thinks about the thought of eating fruit, and then remembering the feast and that maybe they would let him back. After that he realizes that the hunters killed Piggy and Simon, so they would kill him
Leadership is something that stands out in people. In a group, people tend to look to the strongest person to follow. However, the strongest person may not be the best choice to follow. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Jack each have leadership qualities. Jack is probably the stronger of the two; however, Ralph is a better leader. He has a better understanding for the boys. He also has more common sense and treats the boys better than Jack.
In William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies Ralph though not the stronger person, demonstrates a better understanding of people than Jack which gives him better leadership qualities. Ralph displays these useful human qualities as a leader by working towards the betterment of the boys' society. He knows the boys need stability and order if they are to survive on the island. He creates rules and a simple form of government to achieve this order. Jack does not treat the boys with dignity as Ralph does. Ralph understands that the boys, particularly Piggy, have to be given respect and must be treated as equals. This makes Ralph a better leader as he is able to acknowledge that he was not superior to any of the other boys. Ralph's wisdom and ability to look to the future also make him a superior leader. Ralph has the sense to keep his focus on getting off the island. He insists on keeping the fire burning as a distress signal. Ralph's leadership provides peace and order to the island while Jack's leadership makes chaos.
However, at the end of the book, he simply stood for a common human being. In the beginning of the story, before a formal introduction, Ralph was described simply as “a fair boy.” This already sets him out in a favorable light. Then it further describes how he is apparently good-looking and has the natural air of leadership. Of course, the conch played a big role when the kids voted him for leader, but his appearance played a large role as well. For the good first part of the book, Ralph has always symbolized leadership. As the story progresses and the kids became more and more distant from the idea of civilization, Ralph became more like a representation of common sense. Golding wrote, “‘I was chief, and you were going to do what I said. You talk. But you can’t even build huts-then you go off hunting and let the fire-’ He turned away, silent for a moment. Then his voice came again on a peak of feeling. ‘There was a ship-’” At this part, Ralph criticized Jack for not doing the necessary civilized things in favor of quenching his thirst for a hunt. As more and more of the kids become more and more uncivilized, Ralph became one of the last voices of common sense. When Simon and Piggy died, Ralph was the last one who retained that common sense and yearned for civilization. He had no leadership powers left anymore, and he stood for nothing more than a
Ralph first takes on the position as leader at the beginning of the story, when the rest of the boys vote him in as chief. He carries this position until Jack and his fellow hunters break away from the group. Ralph makes it his job to set out the rules to organize a society. Ralph always thinks of what is best for everyone and how they will all benefit from his decisions. Rules and standards are set when Ralph is the chief. He orders the group to build the basic necessities of civilization, shelters, and most importantly to keep the fire going, in hope that they will be rescued and return to humanity. "But I tell you that smoke is more important than the pig, however often you kill one" (Golding 75). Jack, on the other hand, takes on the idea of every man for himself. He does not care about making homes, only about hunting. When Jack is the leader, evil takes over and all good is destroyed. Under Jack's power both Simon and Piggy are killed.
