Have you ever wondered what civilization would turn into if we had to survive away from what we know? Well in the book The Lord of the Flies By William Golding describes the conflict between the human impulse towards savagery and the rules of civilization. In the book There are two characters that explain this, those two characters are Jack and Ralph. Jack became savage and cruel while on the other hand Ralph was civilized. They symbolize the impulse of savagery and the rules of civilization, and they contribute to the theme that savagery is for the cruel and civilization is for the strong. Jack was a cruel person while Ralph is the civil one. In the book Golding made these characters different in many ways. Jack symbolizes savagery in many ways. Like when he painted his face on page 63, ¨Jack planned his new face. He made one cheek and eye-socket white,the he rubbed red over the other half of his face and slashed a black bar of charcoal across from right eat to left jaw. He looked in the pool for his reflection but his breathing troubled the mirror....He looked in astonishment no longer at himself but at an awesome stranger. This quote shows Jack as a savage because he is transforming from the school boy to a mad hunter. Ralph on the other hand symbolizes the opposite he symbolizes the rules of civilization. An example of this is on page 21 when he says,¨That's what this shell is called. I'll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he is speaking.¨ This is showing a sense of order Ralph says this making it civilized where everyone gets a chance to speak without interruptions.
