A number of increasing car accidents have caused people to consider raising the driving age from 16 years of age to 18. The legal driving age should not be raised to 18 because the problem isn’t about age; it is about experience and decision making. When regarding the topic of raising the legal driving age, experience and poor decision making is at the heart of the matter. The people who are pushing for raising of the driving age assume that because teenagers are so young, they are immature and inexperienced. And experience is at the heart of the matter. What’s the point of raising the driving age if going into it, nothing much will really have changed. What’s not great about raising the driving age is that at 18, the new drivers are getting ready to go to college and start their lives on their own. If the driving age is raised to 18, they will be unexperienced with the laws of driving and with driving in general. They will lose two critically important years of learning how to be a good driver and preparing to go out on their own. It doesn’t matter what age the legal driving age is changed to, either way the new drivers will still be inexperienced. Even some adults could be inexperienced if they waited to learn how to drive and get their license. It is said that practice makes perfect. As a solution, for the ones who want the legal driving age raised, an alternate can be imposed. Instead of raising the driving age to 18, the 16 year old applying for a license could have more standards to meet. One such requirement could be that a driver’s education class must be taken and passed in order to get their license. This would put more yay-sayers at ease knowing that the teens are more educated and will be more experienced going into their driving years.
