“The Most Dangerous Game” is a short story by Richard Connell. This story told of Sanger Rainsford, who falls off of his boat while sailing to the Amazon to hunt jaguars. He swims to the shore of Ship-Trap island where he is forced to participate in a hunt that could potentially lead to his death. Of the pieces we have examined this year, Rainsford was the most effective of the protagonists due to his characterization allowing him to interest the audience. Connell characterized Rainsford as a very moral person. When posed with the offer to hunt a human, without hesitation, he declined. His resolution to decline Zaroff’s offer multiple times, despite being in Zaroff’s home and at his mercy, demonstrates his morality. In turn, he becomes relatable
