In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird theres a lot of sexism and racism. There was a lot of sexism and racism because it was during the time of the great depression. A lot of people didn’t have equal rights light white people had. People in Maycomb didn’t like African American people because of their race. Americans were racist towards outsiders or minorities. Todays minorities are accepted in today’s world like everyone else.
In To Kill a Mockingbird racism is a big part of the story. There was a lot of racism in To Kill a Mockingbird. The people of Maycomb were mostly white and they were against African-Americans. Tom Robinson was guilty for raping Mayella Ewell and the facts were very plain. During the trial they didn’t show enough evidence that Tom Robinson raped Mayella Ewell. “I shut my eyes. Judge Taylor was polling the jury: Pg 211” the quote shows that the jury thinks that Tom Robinson is completely guilty. They also think he’s guilty because of his ethnicity.
Racism plays a big part in To Kill a Mockingbird and the quote on Pg 235 proves it. “They said if he’d had two good arms he’d have made it, he was moving that fast. Seventeen bullet holes in him” This quote shows that everyone will do something before they even think about it. And it also shows that people are racist because they would try and shoot someone because of their skin color. Theres a lot more traits in the book that lead to racism.
Courage is one of the traits that are in “To Kill a Mockingbird” Multiple characters show courage in the story like Scout, Jem, Atticus, and Tom Robinson. In the story “To Kill a Mockingbird” courage is something hard to come by in the story because of all the racist and rude comments that get

...en Scout was younger she wasn’t really bothered with racism but by the end of the story Scout realizes how bad racism is and now she see’s why Atticus didn’t want her to get the “Maycomb Disease”. In the beginning of the story Scout didn’t understand a lot of things but when she matured and got older she started to catch on a lot of bad things that people were doing. While Scout was younger she always listened to Atticus. Scout realize that Boo Radley wasn’t a monster and was just a nice person. The author explains explains every little detail how scout succeeded in saving Atticus and Tom Robinson from the angry mob. Scout became courageous when she played the “ Boo Radley game” when they had to touch Boo Radley’s house and come back to where they met their friends at the spot they met up at. Innocence, courage, and racism are the three traits that make the story.
