Addressing racism through Anti –oppressive social work Canada is a developed country and a land of multicultural people. Canada welcomes thousands of people as immigrants yearly. Canada and the USA are white settler societies, established on the ‘near extermination of Indigenous populations’ (Razack, 2000) and the management of immigrant and working-class communities. Racism is one of the major problems in Canada. Anti-oppressive programs are not effective enough for eliminating racism from the society. Racism is the marginalisation of a particular group of people on the basis of colour, class, traditions and culture. Canada is a land of multiculturalism. The immigrants are from different cultural backgrounds. The increased surveillance of Arabs and Muslims after the 9/11 terrorist attack leads to an oppression and marginality of those people who are similar to the image of Arabs and Muslims (Razack and Badwall, 2006) is one example that shows the discrimination. The immigrants need to strive hard to get rooted in the land of Canada mainly because of the discrimination. If the immigrants are from the third world countries the problems will be worse. For example, if we consider the case of internationally educated social workers with good experience .When they apply for the job the Canadian companies doesn’t even consider for an interview. This is actually ridiculous. Because to assess a person, interview is a major factor and if they are not even getting a call for the interview means it shows the attitude of the people towards the third world countries. But even the functioning of the agencies for the implementation of racism couldn’t accomplish their goal completely. Across Boundaries is an agency that works on addressing the problems related to racism. The feedback shows that a lot of people approaching the agency for sharing their experience and seeking assistance from them. It is very difficult to completely eliminate racism from the society because it is a belief of a particular group of people that they are superior. Even though the social service agencies are introducing many programs for ensuring equality through anti-racism projects, the dominance of whiteness in the field will place constraints on the degree of change that is achieved in anti-racism projects (Yee, 2005). It is believed that social work is largely a white profession (Rossiter, 2005; Yee, 2005). But when a white counsellor tries to address the problem of a racially discriminated client the outcome will not reach the goal.
