Racism Today
Racial prejudice and discrimination are very prevalent in our society today, it is unfortunate but it is an issue we not only as a country, but world deals with. Racism is one of the most important social issues of the modern world. It has affected millions of people and is one of the deepest social problems in history. This is an issue has caused countless problems so it is imperative they we open our minds, without prejudice in order to better understand it, and make the necessary changes we need to globally. We will look at the different types of racism, education on racism and its presence and relevance in society today.

The reality is there is no superior or inferior when it comes to race, every human being is equally important no matter the sex, race, religious belief or country they live in. Categorizing or defining any person by any of those or other factors is where the issue arises. It opens the door to discrimination, where there should not be. Racism is not something we are born with, it is acquired. In an article, Breaking the Silence: Time to Talk About Race and Racism, Dr. David Acosta explains there are multiple different types of racism: personally meditated, internalized and institutionalized. ”Personally mediated racism is based on prejudice and discrimination, whether intentional or not. Prejudice refers to the beliefs and assumptions held by individuals about other groups which are often based on limited knowledge. We as people gather information about our world. We learn from many ways including school, family, colleagues, friends, and the community. Information from books, movies, television, and other media also shape our minds, and with this knowledge we obtain our own personal attitudes, beliefs and opinions. In our attitudes, belief and opinions come reasoning, bias, misconceptions, stereotyping and prejudice. We acquire these generalizations over time and are influenced by many factors, and that is where racism comes into play. Feelings of superiority or inferiority are formed based of race, sex, gender, etc. and these are taught feelings. It is an unfortunate fact in the world we live in to think of the prejudice, discrimination and hate that comes because of differing traits of other human beings and the suffering, sadness and negative feelings one has to experience because of these factors. There needs to be more awareness, acceptance and understanding with society and how racism is not okay, there is no need to hate another human being based off of the color of their skin. Taking a stand against racism and discrimination is crucial, there needs to be more understanding and is not something that needs to be taken lightly or casually. Racism has existed through the world for centuries and has been the primary reason for numerous conflicts, wars and other human tragedies all over the planet. From 16th to 19th-century blacks were taken from their homes and families and taken for the slave trade. They were often overworked, beaten and killed. Why do we always have to live in the back?” a fair-skinned black character named Sarah Jane asks in the 1959 film “Imitation of Life.” Sarah Jane ultimately decides to abandon her black mother and pass for white because she “wants to have a chance in life.” She explains, “I don’t want to have to come through back doors or feel lower than other people.” In the classic novel Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, a mixed-race man first begins to experience internalized racism after he witnesses a white mob burn a black man alive. Some people say prejudice is part of human nature. Others think we learn it from our elders. Either one could be true, as there are various controversial beliefs about why prejudice exists in the world. One interesting theory is that prejudice is an emotional reaction that is triggered in our brain whenever we encounter unknown people, who have different physical characteristics, different personalities, and/or different beliefs. Will this dilemma come to a halt? Can all Americans see each other as equals despite their skin color and nationality; and what role has it played in past generations versus today’s generations and how will it affect our future? Has this on going way of thinking gotten better or worse? These are questions raised when many think about the subject; especially members of American ethnic groups and backgrounds, because most have dealt with racial discrimination in their life time.
In this world we are constantly being categorized by our race and ethnicity, and for many people it’s hard to look beyond that. Even though in the past many stood up for equality and to stop racism and discrimination, it still occurs. In this nation of freedom and equality, there are still many people who believe that their race is superior to others. These beliefs are the ones that destroy our nation and affect the lives of many. As a member of the dominant race in America, I know that I possess certain unearned privileges that allow me to be more successful overall. I was raised with the mindset that racism doesn't affect me because I am white. The U.S. education system taught me about my racial and ethnic history, but it is likely that my classmates of different races could not say the same. I learned about racism in school but not to view whites as privileged or degrading towards subordinate groups. My group was never seen at fault for oppression or took any responsibility for it. As human beings, each person might consider himself as unique because we have certain common yet very distinctive structures in our anatomy. The human physiology and basic anatomy are unchanging for all people. However, there are differences in color of the skin, appearance, adaptability, physical viability and many other factors. From generation to generation there is a transformation that shapes and changes all of our traits, and some of the characteristics are greatly influenced by variations in geography and also the environment. Humans have so many similarities, but not all individuals have respect and solidarity towards others. The idea behind this is the feeling that one is better than someone else solidly based on race, and this is what creates and enhances the idea of racism. The reason for choosing racism is to better understand the development of racism and the existing theories that have explained this issue. In 1962, 85% of whites thought that black children in their community had just as good of a chance of getting a good education as white children. The constant trend for lack of knowledge about racism and/or discrimination is real. Now, whites, realize that in 1962 black children did not have as good of a chance, if any, of getting a good education in comparison to white children. Even though the world has progressed greatly in the last couple of decades, both socially and technologically, racism, hatred and prejudice still exists today, deeply embedded in old-fashioned, narrow-minded traditions and values.
