Racial prejudice and discrimination are very prevalent in our society today, it is unfortunate but it is an issue we not only as a country, but world deals with. Racism is one of the most important social issues of the modern world. It has affected millions of people and is one of the deepest social problems in history. This is an issue has caused countless problems so it is imperative they we open our minds, without prejudice in order to better understand it, and make the necessary changes we need to globally. We will look at the different types of racism, education on racism and its presence and relevance in society today.

The reality is there is no superior or inferior when it comes to race, every human being is equally important no matter the sex, race, religious belief or country they live in. Categorizing or defining any person by any of those or other factors is where the issue arises. It opens the door to discrimination, where there should not be. Racism is not something we are born with, it is acquired. In an article, Breaking the Silence: Time to Talk About Race and Racism, Dr. David Acosta explains there are multiple different types of racism: personally meditated, internalized and institutionalized. ”Personally mediated racism is based on prejudice and discrimination, whether intentional or not. Prejudice refers to the beliefs and assumptions held by individuals about other groups which are often based on limited knowledge. We as people gather information about our world. We learn from many ways including school, family, colleagues, friends, and the community. Information from books, movies, television, and other media also shape our minds, and with this knowledge we obtain our own personal attitudes, beliefs and opinions. In our attitudes, belief and opinions come reasoning, bias, misconceptions, stereotyping and prejudice. We acquire these generalizations over time and are influenced by many factors, and that is where racism comes into play. Feelings of superiority or inferiority are formed based of race, sex, gender, etc. and these are taught feelings. It is an unfortunate fact in the world we live in to think of the prejudice, discrimination and hate that comes because of differing traits of other human beings and the suffering, sadness and negative feelings one has to experience because of these factors. There needs to be more awareness, acceptance and understanding with society and how racism is not okay, there is no need to hate another human being based off of the color of their skin. Taking a stand against racism and discrimination is crucial, there needs to be more understanding and is not something that needs to be taken lightly or casually. A change needs to happen, and it requires involvement, not from a select group of people, but society
