What is a Quinceanera? A quinceanera is a traditional celebration for a girl turning 15. It is to celebrate her transformation from childhood to adulthood. This is usually celebrated by Latin Americans and among Latinos. In the Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central and South American traditions, the custom can be referred to as Quince Anos, a quinces, a Quinceanera, and Quinceanero or a Fiesta Rosa. This celebration is also to embrace religious customs, and the virtues of family and social responsibilities. These customs highlight God, family, friends, music, food, and dance. As for Americans we celebrate our Sweet 16th instead. What happens during a Quinceanera? A Quinceanera usually starts with a religious ceremony. After the ceremony, there is a reception. When all the serious stuff is done, the party begins with festivities, music, dancing, and eating. This is where a choreographed waltz or dance performed by the Quinceanera and her Court. It is traditional for the Quinceanera to choose who is invited to her party and also to choose her special friends to perform the Court of Honor. Usually the people that perform this are her closest friends, brothers, cousins, and special people in her life.
