The World of Public Policy Analysis Helping the American people from behind the scenes, ensuring the safety and satisfaction of the public, making sure the average person knows about the issues affecting them. This, dear reader, is the point behind being a Public Policy Analyst. Public Policy Analysts work to advise government officials in the legislative branch, ensuring the laws and regulations they pass are in the best interests of the public, and don’t actively alienate people. They also help to raise funds and advocate for certain causes, getting the word out to the public about certain issues and certain bills. Many different jobs have had massive changes happen to them, and Public Policy Analysis is no exception. For instance, the job of a public policy Analysts may someday be made much easier by, “increasing awareness among members of Congress, state and local officials, and citizens” (“Public Policy”) about national issues. These days, thanks to things like social media, and widespread internet news sites, more and more people are becoming aware of the issues going on in the world around them. This is very helpful to most government officials, especially to Public Policy Analysts, because it means it will be easier for them to engage the public in their advocacy movements without having to explain what they’re fighting for. Today, technology is part of everything in our lives, including our jobs. As technology advances, it will be used more and more in all kinds of management jobs, including Public Policy Analysis (Garvin). Many different jobs rely on technology to communicate across long distances, and with large groups. Technology can also be very useful for researching, as with the click of a keyboard, people can find massive amounts of information on any given topic. Both communication and research are integral parts of Public Policy Analysis, and with them, technology will always play an important role in this job. Therefore, Public Policy Analysts will always be clamoring for better and better technology they can use to perform their job to their maximum potential. As this technology becomes available, it will change the landscape of Public Policy Analysts forever. Public policies are developed in response to the existence of a perceived problem or an opportunity. The analysis delves into a public issue or problem and assesses a set of proposed government action for addressing the issue. The job of the analyst is to describe the background and status of an issue and then, using research and analysis, determine a proper government action to resolve the issue. By comparing options and weighing their expected benefits, the analyst should conclude with a recommended course of action or inaction to addressing the issue.

While this initial stance kept politicians on the defensive, enough time has passed that individual politicians and even entire governments are starting to use social media to connect with their communities in new, open ways (Sniderman, 2011). However, as these social platforms are becoming more pervasive in society, studies of their influence on our lives has grown but have not kept pace with the use in government. Because social media is a relatively recent phenomenon, research on social media use in government is limited. Literature on the effectiveness of social media and government has increased but only in some areas. The purpose of this review is to understand governance through citizen engagement and provide a working context of the term social media. The literature review will provide a basis for what is known about the use of social media by government, in particular at the local level.

“If you can write it and you can say it, you can do it.” In a single sentence Professor Eric Claville succeeded in attracting me to the study of public administration. Sitting in Introduction to Public Policy class, I was instantly fascinated by the idea that through effective communication I could improve policies and programs to better serve the public. Professor Claville’s lessons enabled me to think analytically as I developed a scholarly policy brief entitled “Enforcing a State-wide Texting While Driving Law in Arizona”. Soon, I was faced with the notion that public administration was not only an agent for change, but a tool to fulfill my passion. It is a possible pathway to take on a leadership role that would make a difference for disadvantaged groups.
In the future I would like to see myself, as a continuously promoted public official who could possibly become a pro-active politician in today’s demanding political arena. To achieve this, I would like to gain more knowledge which can help me reach intellectual maturity to the latest practices adopted in the field of Public Administration. My desire for self-development in this area and curiosity to learn past and contemporary developments in different societies will help me to solve the problems easily.
