Domestic violence is an epidemic experienced in by people all throughout the United States. The effects domestic violence can be experienced any individual regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic status, race, religion, or sexual orientation. Those who experience this type of violence can be affected by physical, psychological, and economic abuse. Domestic violence can be described as a learned behavior because children exposed to this form of violence are likely to repeat it as they grow in age or believe it to be acceptable treating as a norm when in a relationship. The effects of domestic violence are plentiful and can are not limited to the time in which the situation occurred but can be carried by an individual throughout their life.

Domestic violence aimed towards a child is a form of parental psychopathology (Bartol, C. R., & Bartol, A. M., 2014). Children who are exposed can experience a continual cycle of physical aggression and violence which is referred to as multiassaultive (Bartol, C. R., & Bartol, A. M., 2014). According to study of American children by Ullman and Straus, approximately 10 percent of children have participated in child-to-parent violence during the past12 months. Children who are exposed to domestic violence experience several forms of abuse which may include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. The developmental process of a child can be negatively affected due to domestic violence, causing changes in their behavior, social behavior, and cognitive skills. The effects of domestic violence can carry on creating a cycle of behavior in the children. Boys and girls who witness domestic violence in their home may repeat what they observed as an adult.
