In the Shakespearean play Hamlet, the reader is introduced to the Prince of Denmark, Hamlet, who loses his father during the beginning of the play. His mother marries his uncle, within two months, after the old King’s death. Furthermore, Hamlet meets the ghost of his father, who tells him that Claudius is the murderer of the Old King Hamlet. Filled with fury, Hamlet seeks vengeance throughout the play; however in the end, all the main characters die. The play will be examines, through a psychoanalytic perspective, which

It argues that literary texts, like dreams, express the secret unconscious desires and anxieties of the author, that a literary work is a manifestation of the author's own neuroses. One may psychoanalyze a particular character within a literary work, but it is usually assumed that all such characters are projections of the author's psyche (Psychoanalytic Criticism).
Hamlet’s unconscious desires and anxieties can be seen through his actions and motivations. In the play Hamlet, one can examine how Hamlet is driven by the three parts of his psyche, and the Oedipus Complex.
First, Shakespeare portrays Hamlet’s id to seek vengeance throughout the play, one can see through the Psychoanalytic Literary Theory. For example: “…(How strange or odd soe’er I bear myself,/As I perchance hereafter shall think meet/To put an antic disposition on)…” (I.iv.169-171). Hamlet’s unconscious desire to kill Claudius can be seen, as he informs Horatio to not be alarmed if he acts crazy now days. In conclusion, throughout Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, one may analyze the protagonist through the three structures of the unconscious mind and the Oedipus complex. As Hamlet looks for ways to grasp his revenge from Claudius, and is prevented many times due to his super-ego and his repressed sexual desires towards his mother. Nonetheless, in the end he attains a small piece of victory, by orchestrating a play to mock Claudius, to see him feeling guilty and embarrassed. However, would one say the reason behind Hamlet’s revenge be the murder of his father or the haste marriage of his mother to Claudius?
