The order of the international system during the Cold War was generally viewed as having two major superpowers, known as a bipolar system. The two “poles” during the Cold War era were the United States and the USSR or Soviet Union (now known as Russia) and they emerged after World War II. At the end of the Cold War, it became apparent that the United States was the only major superpower in the world, it was more of a unipolar system. In today’s world, we are currently seeing the re-emergence of Russia as a nation with power as well as China quickly becoming a superpower. I think the pros of giving Germany and Japan permanent seats on the council would be that they are both powerful nations and have a large amounts of influence already. Germany and Japan also have higher a GDP than many of the nations on the Security Council, which is a good indicator of how successful a country is. The arguments against giving them a seat would be the histories of the two nations, with Germany being directly responsible for World War I and World War II and Japan’s history of imperialism. Another con would be that there could be “too many cooks in the kitchen” if there were seven permanent members. A third downside would be that there would be two less seats for the non-permanent members to potentially be elected two, this could reduce the influx of new ideas into the council and lead to a status quo that could potentially be harmful the population of the …show more content…

The arguments against foreign aid are that countries should have no obligation to look out for others, that countries should focus on helping their own citizens first, and that foreign aid can become a crutch for countries who may come to rely solely on foreign aid and not bother developing themselves as they will always have foreign aid coming
