Since 1916, Planned Parenthood has provided affordable reproductive healthcare and has worked to better educate both men and women about their sexual wellbeing. Planned Parenthood allows people, regardless of gender or sexuality, to have a protected space to associate with individuals like them. A segment of our population argues that Planned Parenthood goes against their religious beliefs or claims that their tax dollars go to an organization that they don’t support- however, Planned Parenthood is a necessary program that supplies expert health care and information to people worldwide.

Planned Parenthood is the leading provider of affordable healthcare for all kinds of people across the world, however, there has been a fair share of many false accusations and controversial topics regarding the organization. Contrary to popular belief, Planned Parenthood does not receive federal funding of any kind. Instead, services are paid for through Medicaid or any insurance that the patient might have. Thus no money comes from the government but from the insurances companies. Most insurances companies “cover a set of preventive services — like shots and screening tests — at no cost to you.” (Preventive Health Services). 60% of Planned Parenthood patients depended on federal programs, like Medicaid, to help provide the preventive and necessary health care (istandwithpp.org). So, although Medicaid is a federal program, Planned Parenthood does not directly receive funding from the government. When you hear politicians talk about “defunding” Planned Parenthood, they're talking about blocking millions of people from getting health assistance. Planned Parenthood also receives a large sum of its finance from donors and supporters. In fact, the organization has a following of 10 million people, consisting of activists and contributors alike. People who are concerned where their tax dollars go can put their worries aside and rest easy knowing that their money doesn’t directly go to an organization that they don’t support.
Abortion has always been a topic of controversy, especially amongst the conservative crowd. In-clinic abortions at Planned Parenthood offer the medically approved and safest form of the procedure, which is one where an unwanted or unsafe pregnancy is terminated. There are several types of abortions provided at the clinics- vacuum aspiration, and dilation and evacuation. In vacuum aspiration, or otherwise known as suction abortion, uses gentle suction to empty the uterus (PlannedParenthood.org). Planned Parenthood states that the latter procedure, D&E for short, uses medical tools, along with suction, to empty the uterus. Both methods are, according to the clinics, are “extremely effective” and are successful “99 times out of 100.” (PlannedParenthood.org). When one thinks of Planned Parenthood, they often associate it with abortion. However, it only comprises 3% of the services offered (PlannedParenthood.org). The other 97% of treatments are often not acknowledged, shadowed by the stereotype of abortion.
