Medicine and health care are extremely essential for the well-being of a person. Every person needs health care because it is near impossible to go throughout life without having some sort of physical issue. Some people even dream about being some sort of doctor. Deciding to become a doctor can be a decision that will change an individual’s life forever. A person who decides to be a doctor will have to make life or death decisions for their patients. That individual who decides to go into a health care field could have been influenced by something he or she saw early or even later in life. We have all had those dentist or orthodontist appointments that were a complete nightmare. Getting poked, jabbed, and pinched in the mouth. Well, I have been thinking since I have had this experience and wouldn’t want anyone else to go through that. Maybe I could become an orthodontist and ensure to my patients that these problems do not happen. I enjoy helping people that I don’t know and being as precise as I need to be, to be an orthodontist. Though I have never had any experience at all with any of this, that is what school is for. I realize that being an orthodontist is the best career choice for me.
The road to gaining admission to medical school and becoming a physician is long, difficult, and intensely competitive. I want to learn more about the medical field. I am very fascinated in the science aspects. You need to be attentive; sensitive to people’s needs and have a drive to address their needs in an utmost concerned manner. It is one of those jobs that require long working hours and often one must overlook one’s needs and cater to patients. I am a sensitive and very hard-working individual.
I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. In order to determine whether or not clinical medicine was the right career for me, I started shadowing Dr. Richard Turner in the ER. Through my experiences with him, I learned that medicine is a problem solving process. As I watched, he would take a patient's history and try to piece together the correct diagnosis by deciding which scenarios were more likely than others. I was attracted by the dynamic nature of each patient's diagnosis and the necessity for an open mind. My hobby of flying has taught me to look at everything in life with a new perspective and to assess the situation from as many angles as possible. Watching Dr. Turner has confirmed my perception of a medical career and the nature of the work involved. Since I love puzzles and problems, the problem solving aspect also increased my desire to become a physician.

From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because of the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I wanted too. However, that dream came to a halt.
In electing the correct career path, which one’s life will orbit around, makes one deliberate all the aspects of said path. When determining the right path, look at the hours the job would require, the years of schooling, the capability to take orders, and being able to keep pace on a scholarly level. Knowing the level of intellect a field necessitates allows one to determine if they can learn at the pace that is expected and required. Fields that fall into the scope of medicine can be intellectually demanding to study. The inclination to help others is not the only quality desired in nursing, the job is mentally as well as physically demanding.
