“By the time the average American has turned 70, the seven day pill organizer may be overflowing with colored capsules.” This statement from the article Promised Land or Purgatory is sad, yet true. This article began by saying that yes, it would be great to live to 100 years old but would it be worth it if at age 70 you become extremely sick and you are forced to rely on medications and oxygen tanks. Is that the type of quality of life you would like to experience with your last 30 years of life still ahead of you.
In the first paragraph of the first page they state that there is hope for us, science may have found ways through the challenges that acquaint old age. It was explained that there really isn't a reason people should be afraid of old age. This factor happens to everyone and many people deal with it in different ways. This is an extremely controversial topic today. For a old, sick and slowly dying person it is frustrating for some to want to continue with their daily lives. Some feel it is repetitive, life is a chore to them . Some are no longer able to do tasks themselves such as dressing themselves, bathing, eating and being mobile. These types of tasks seem so easy to us and we take granted for the ability to do this on our own, but in their eyes it is extremely difficult and defeating.
Because of my religion, We are pushed to believe that natural death is the only way you will be accepted. In my eyes I could see both sides. My mother is a visiting nurse who sees the sick and elderly on a daily basis. Most of these people are extremely depressed because they can not leave there house let alone do small tasks themselves. She tells me stories of how her patient must take a handful or huge pills morning and evenings. If I had to take a walk in their shoes I would be extremely sad and lonely
