I think that functional managers would make good project managers. Any project manager must have the knowledge about the functional process of the organization. Otherwise it will not be possible for that person to manage the functional managers. As the functional managers are completely familiar with the functional process of the company they will have better knowledge and insight about it. They may lack professional degree or training which needs to be provided to them. The functional manager can be turned into a good project manager. Question 1–9: What types of projects might be more appropriate for functional management rather than project management, and vice versa? Project manager have some advantage over the functional manager as they have better professional and technical knowledge. But in most of the cases the functional managers have greater experience to do the real job. There would be a shift in the relative degree of importance in terms of time management, communications, and motivation in a project management environment as opposed to a traditional management environment. In a project management environment the project manager works with a very specific (usually very short) time period. Each project has a predetermined and specific life. Project management is a multifunctional job which cut across several functional lines. They make communication with the top level management and co-ordinate between the top level management and functional manager. In this coordination process they try to complete the project successfully and thereby contribute to the mail or ultimate goal of the organization. They themselves get motivated to reach that goal and also at the same time motivate their subordinate to accomplish the desired job. Question 1–11: Classical management has often been defined as a process in which the manager does not necessarily perform things for himself, but accomplishes objectives through others in a group situation.
