Money. It is the American Dream, but losing land to deforestation, unsafe working conditions, battle for women's rights, child labor, and unhealthy food production is not. It is the 1900’s, America has just recently won it’s war with Spain and is feeling pretty good but, underneath it all, a reform movement called Progressivism is rising within the United States. (Background Essay). Progressivism is calling for the reformation of problems, like the ones previously mentioned. They believe in social equality, and they want it done without major economic downfalls. I have been gratefully gifted with $1,000,000 and given a question: where will I put my million dollars between the many progressivism causes? The three causes I would like to help and reform would be: conversation and deforestation, food safety, and women’s rights. I will give $600,00 to the deforestation and conservation cause. Just like John Muir, I believe in nature as being our save all and that we should preserve the wilderness still left in our world. The trees chopped down for logging from 16250 to 1920, cut the amount of primary forests down more than fifty percent. (Document A). Protecting these forests will have an impact on our …show more content…
And that cause is food safety, especially in meat-packing plants. Upton Sinclair, author of The Jungle, has brought to light how disgusting the meat-packing industry is. (Document D). I would like to further these findings by either shutting down these companies completely or reforming them to be healthier, safer. Food is literally scraped off the floor, covered in rat dung and dirt, and placed through a processing machine where from there it is packaged and shipped out to people nationwide. (Document D). Fixing this problem will first and foremost, keep people from getting sick and possibly dying. It will also fix the health of the workers because working in those conditions cannot be healthy, for anyone
During the Progressive era, consumer safety was a hot issue. In Upton Sinclair’s book The Jungle, there were many disturbing things the American people learned about the meat packing industry. After people saw that their meat had dead rats and tuberculosis many did not want to buy any meat. People were disgusted by the things that they could buy without knowing what it was. This brought about stricter health codes and made the consumers have a little more peace of mind.
Meatpacking pertains to the raising, slaughtering, packaging and processing of livestock such as pigs, cows, and chickens. Prior to slaughter, animals are grown and fed. Food borne illness and pathogens still plague the meatpacking industry since the creation of meatpacking. The government plays a huge role in providing legislation and ensuring the safety of meat products and business. Although the government is meant to inspect and guarantee safety, many unlawful practices appear overlooked pertaining to the safety of meat for consumers. Meatpacking commenced thousands of years ago, and the safety of the meatpacking industry has been evaluated greatly since the industrial revolution in America. The history of the meatpacking industry in America, the impact of literature such as the novel of the jungle written by Upton Sinclair, the rendering and irradiation of meat, and current worker issues contribute to the horrible safety precautions as well as the awful environment involving the meatpacking industry.
Factory farm animal harm negatively impacts farming and consumer health; by offering government incentives to factory farmers to open graze and bring awareness to consumers of the health risks of consuming factory farm meat, animal abuse could significantly
Theodore Roosevelt, the founder of the Progressive party, once stated, “A great democracy has got to be progressive or it will soon cease to be great or a democracy”
Over the past few decades, small and medium sized farms have been taken over by large-scale factory farms. These farms house billions of animals used for consumption each year. The conditions on factory farms are filthy, overcrowded and disease ridden. Animals forced to live out their lives on these farms are subject to extremely harsh conditions, such as mutilation, confinement and living spaces piled high with feces. Not only do conditions on factory farms make life for livestock absolutely miserable, but factory farms are also negatively impacting human health and the environment. The production and sale of meat has become a billion-dollar industry based upon the bloodshed of other sentient beings. With this being the case, at the very least, factory farms need to be properly regulated and companies involved need to be held accountable for their abuse.
Imagine having a big juicy hamburger or some fried chicken in front of you, of course you cannot wait to eat it. Now a days we want to eat the cheapest, fastest thing we can find without realizing where it came from or how the animal was treated before being killed. The production of food has changed drastically over the course of the years. There is more food being produced, but at the cost of becoming unhealthy. In the documentary Food Inc. released in 2008, it goes through and provides the real facts of what goes on in the food we eat. The documentary provides an American family’s view, a farmer’s view, and an expert’s view towards the modern day food production system. The movie makes you aware of the how dangerous food has become over
The Meat Packing Industry has progressed in a positive manner ever since the early 20th Century. In 1906 Upton Sinclaire’s novel “The Jungle” revealed the truth about the meat packing industry. When the book “The Jungle” out it revealed the truth about the poor working conditions and the unsanitary slaughtering of animals. For the past century, American works have been impacted by the new laws. Most workers gave their undying loyalty to keep their jobs, sometimes even lives. Bad slaughtering practice lead to spoiled meat and even contamination, the meat would be doctored and still sold. The public doesn’t know that meat packing business haven’t really envovled, they have impacted Americans and many changes have been made.
This book book described, in detail, the horrendous conditions of the meatpacking industry of Chicago. The public looked to Roosevelt for guidance during this time. Roosevelt came to the peoples aid when he signed the Meat Inspection Act in 1906. The meatpacking industry certainly needed to be reformed for reasons displayed by “The Jungle”. Before reading this book many people who consumed this very meat did not understand how unsanitary the industry as a whole was. The accounts of working conditions are disgusting, walls were covered with slime and manure, dead rats being mixed into meat, equipment covered with blood and filth. Despite these awful working conditions, the meatpackers could be applauded for their innovativeness in recycling, through the people who consumed the meat did not necessarily agree. They unintentionally created a lot of new products that we use on a
Progressivism is a time of change, a time for reform, that has helped shape America to be the nation it is today. Progressivism is defined as “the political orientation of those who favor progress toward better conditions in government and society (WordNet Search).” Between this era, and World War One, a lot of time and effort when into what the influences the country went under between the power of Woodrow Wilson and the society along with Europe, Russia, France, and everyone else involved in this war. The progressive era was a thirty year span from 1890s until the 1920s. People saw that there was many horrible things occurring in society and the government and they wanted these things to be fixed. Some examples of these things are living conditions, work conditions, and the wrong that the government was doing. Reformers wanted to solve issues with efficiency, nonpartisanship, morality, democratization, education, and expertise. People do not know exactly where these progressives came from, but it was more or less a group effort that grew and grew with the ideas of bettering the country as a whole, even if some of these choices and solutions were not that great. Yes, the motives for the reform were good but sometimes included horrible actions which excluded people or discriminated others.
At the turn of the twentieth century “Muckraking” had become a very popular practice. This was where “muckrakers” would bring major problems to the publics attention. One of the most powerful pieces done by a muckraker was the book “The Jungle”, by Upton Sinclair. The book was written to show the horrible working and living conditions in the packing towns of Chicago, but what caused a major controversy was the filth that was going into Americas meat. As Sinclair later said in an interview about the book “I aimed at the publics heart and by accident hit them in the stomach.”# The meat packing industry took no responsibility for producing safe and sanitary meat.
The food industry is a very a powerful business that has made additions, alterations, and modifications to food. These changes in food negatively affect the food and animals used and also the consumers. Food is losing nutrition. Animals are being taken advantage of for the sake of profit. Consumers are being subjected to disease. Change needs to occur, and everyone can take a part in the change. Individuals can protect themselves by becoming more knowledgable and changing their eating habits. Federal government and other powerful agencies and individuals can spread this awareness and also put a halt to the advantageous behavior the food industry is doing
The Progressive movement in Tennessee focused on Tennesseans preparing to make progress happen. The Tennesseans tried taking actions against the state government and its political systems which was still controlled by the Democrats. Since they were unhappy with politics they decided to join others from different nations to organize the political movement. Tennessean begin to participate in the campaigns to limit the authority that big businesses had. On the other hand, they wanted to improve highways, cities, end women’s suffrage, and reconstruct the education systems. During the progressive movement Tennesseans believed that alcohol was causing social problems, so they decided to have a prohibition movement. After the unsuccessful plan to obtain a statewide vote that would ban alcohol, Tennesseans began working towards the Four Mile Law. Which prohibited any saloon to sale alcohol within four miles of a school district. In 1907, the people of Knoxville won a vote to
Progressives were people who wanted to apply their forward thinking concepts to the American government. One of their biggest beliefs was that government should be actively involved in large corporations. They thought that it was the government's responsibility to regulate the actions of large corporations. Warren Harding’s administration went against this belief and many other beliefs that progressives had. These differences of ideals is what caused progressivism to inevitably die at the beginning of the 20th century. “We therefore demand a strong National regulation of inter-state corporations...the existing concentration of vast wealth under a corporate system, unguarded and uncontrolled by the nation…”(Document A). This document describes
Progressivists believe that people learn best from what they consider most relevant to their lives. Therefore, the curriculum should be centered around the experiences, interests, and abilities of students. Teachers should plan lessons that arouse curiosity and push the students to a higher level of knowledge. In addition to reading textbooks, the students must learn by doing. Students should often leave the classroom for fieldtrips during which they interact with nature or society. Teachers should also stimulate the students' interests through thought-provoking games.
“Education is a social process; education is growth; education is not preparation for life but is life itself.” John Dewey describes and supports progressivism, an education philosophy that I professionally identify with. Progressivism is a student centered philosophy that focuses on experiences, opportunities, and values that enhance a student 's learning and life. The role of the teacher is to act primarily as a facilitator of learning, they encourage and guide students to explore and promote individual development. As a future educator I believe it is important to involve students and allow them to take responsibility for their own learning and achieving their goals. The role of the student is to discover, engage, and express themselves.
