I began in the field of program evaluation as a volunteer for Mouvement du Nid in Cote d’Ivoire with no prior skills in the field. The organization requested me to conduct a process evaluation for a project about sexual education. Relying on my research skills, I accepted the challenge. To accomplish my role, I read extensively to understand the process to conduct program evaluations; I also met with some experts for advice. Armed with the knowledge I gained and my determination, I developed a process evaluation plan after discussions with the stakeholders. I went back to school for a Ph.D. in psychoeducation at the University of Montreal. My research topic gave me the opportunity to participate in each of the evaluation phases of a school-based substance abuse prevention project. Under the guidance of Dr. Fallu, my thesis advisor, I gained valuable skills in developing a program evaluation plan. During the implementation of this plan, I engaged stakeholders, designed data collection tools, analyzed data and disseminated the findings through different channels (journal articles, reports, conferences, etc.). In addition, I also possess skills in implementation science and proposal development. While interning at EngenderHealth, I significantly contributed to draft a proposal which was awarded $150K by PEPFAR to integrate HIV/AIDS and reproductive health activities in Cote d’Ivoire. Later, following successful completion of this project, EngenderHealth opened an office for the first time in the country. Furthermore, I have an excellent knowledge on issues related to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care, substance abuse/violence prevention and reproductive health.
