The article I read was “Is for profit the future of non-profit?” by Amy Schiller. By introducing Bush Lauren’s FEED project, a for-profit company that donates a portion of each bag sale to fight hunger and to feed children in the most deprived area, Amy emphasized the trend of marketized philanthropy and Philanthrocapitalism. Combining daily shopping experience with significant problems in the world, it became more and more pervasive that company establishes businesses that have social mission integrated directly with their products. The concept that discussed a lot in the article called Philanthrocapitalism, which is knowledge-based, strategic, impact-oriented and market conscious. I do believe capitalism itself can be philanthropic and contribute to human well-being. Many argue that traditional capitalism has produced more social good than any other type of economic system. As Amy mentioned in the article, this “blunt pragmatism” was easy to follow and hard to resist. However, I do not think for-profit will finally be the route. For-profit is unable to have full attention on improving the social goods. The for-profit sector is responsible for the capital-intensive aspects of the work, so it will not invest in projects with good meaning but little profit. FEED project, as well as other similar projects, is just a business model with the aim of generating capitals. Moreover, it is hard to tell how will people use the money if they did spend on the products. If the general public prefers to buy products rather than donating money to the non-profit sector, the nonprofit world became more complex and unstable. Furthermore, the meaning of philanthropy is “love of human beings”. If someone purchased FEED bag for $80 but not because of their willingness of contributing to charity work but their loyalty to the brand, we somehow lose our humanity in the process of being
