Recommended: Crime scene processing

Profiling, is a way of finding a killer or killers. A profile is created by using their psychological and behavioral characteristics. I learned a lot about this from the tv show called Criminal Minds, it is about a group of F.B.I. detectives that look beyond the evidence and look more on the psychology of the killer. They use this method to find the killer and save victims. Profiling is an actual method used by detectives in the F.B.I. not just the T.V. show. The T.V show breaks down the killers murder by the how they kill is accomplished, what their comfort zone is with the kill, what could be the potential stressor that started the murders and how they selected their victims. That opens information about the killer that assists the detectives in potentially finding more victims, which could assist them in finding their first killings. The first several murders may have a clue as to who the killer is because they likely messed up somewhere leaving clues to who they are.
How they kill their victims demonstrates a lot as well, for example if they have had dinner or gone to the movies (spent time) with the victim and then killed them, that would show they like to build a rapport with the victim. Another method is if they knock them out and hold them to torture them, it demonstrates that they only want to cause the victim pain. Victims that may have similar features, same gender or similar age, says they might be going after people who are like someone from their past that they had a stressful/painful relationship with or felt inferior to. If there are not commonalities in the victim, it could be they were just victims the killer had the opportunity to take control of or manipulate. Overall the victim and crime scene tells a lot about the killer and who he or she might be. Other indicators can include; where the body is found, how it is placed and how it is clothed or not clothed. Locations is often an indicator of how bold the killer is, if the body is taken
