It is by setting constant goals for myself that I am able to demonstrate values and initiative throughout my life in a consistent way. Immediate goals limit distractions along the path I choose to take. Short-term goals keep my eyes down the road to ensure that I can overcome the obstacles ahead. Long-term goals allow me to understand that the obstacles that I see ahead are far inferior to unforeseen challenges that wait for me down the road. It is with this system in mind that I am able to constantly achieve while maintaining my core values and constant initiative. Professional Development Plan Entering into higher education and professional advancement, I have reflected on my educational background, nursing career opportunities, and future goals. Development of a plan will assist with navigating through a pathway of advanced practice training. According to Johnson (2012), the benefit of a professional development plan and portfolio can help individuals organize, present, and reflect on their personal and professional accomplishments. This presentation and summarization were the first step in mapping out my course to success.
In the years that follows completing my BSN, my professional development plan involved viewing nursing as a career not as a job. I know there will be days more difficult than other, but at the end of the day, I want to be know that I made a difference in someone’s life. Viewing nursing as a career would need me to pursuit an advanced nursing degree. Continuing my education has be a goal in which I have placed effort into, and will continue doing so my working to obtain a Master of Science in Nursing. I plan to give myself one semester break, and apply for a program.
First, one must identify the issue at hand; then, promote an open, honest relationship encouraging staff to be forthcoming with their perception of the problem; the team can then focus on coming up with a solution. Furthermore, enlisting a positive attitude, empowering the team, remaining active throughout the process, and demonstrating sincerity in the appreciation shown to those working hard during challenging times will prove beneficial as studies have shown a strong correlation with staff retention and the implementation of a transformational leadership approach (Casida & Parker, 2011). Conferences that aim to teach new skills and methods, formal pieces of academic material, training methods provided by an external or internal organizations are all learning opportunities through which professional development is attained.
