In the US nearly 40% of adults and 19% of the youth are suffering from obesity (Larned CNN). To add on, more than half of these people have a diet consisting of red meats and meats that are modified to help make them last longer on the shelves or help them taste better for longer periods of time. Processed meats can include unhealthy fats and nutrients that can lead to obesity. In America obesity is a very substantial issue and has been a big issue ever since the mid 1900’s (James). There are plenty of ways people can solve this issue. What can help is to refrain from meats such as beef, pork, chicken, and different processed meats. Processed meats can cause different diseases and might lead to obesity. Fish is a great source of healthy protein for many vegetarians, “According to researchers, the additional benefit from fish probably comes from Omega-3 fatty acids” (Chen). These Omega-3 acids are different from the Omega acids in meats like poultry. In poultry there is a type of acid called Omega-6. When to much poultry like chicken is consumed the acids can lead to high blood pressure, it can increase the risks of blood clots which then will increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke, and finally it can retain water from the body. Though Omega-3 acids can, when taken correctly improves cardiovascular health, it can also when not consumed enough it may lead to a greater risk of a heart attack. Studies on a group called the seventh-day adventists, a group of vegetarians, was conducted to show the results of different vegetarian health choices, “The Seventh-day adventists were chosen in part because the religion encourages a healthy lifestyle. Previous studies on the population found that their diet is associated with lower rate of obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure” (Chen). Unlike the normal diet the Seventh-day adventists eat, a full vegetarian diet consisting of veggies, grains, fruits, and nuts. Overall, this makes for a lower rate of obesity. As shown before, eating different processed meats can cause harmful diseases, “Vegetarians are less susceptible to all the major diseases that afflict contemporary humanity. Thus they live longer, healthier, and more productive lives” (“The Meat-Free Life”). What this article is saying is that most vegetarians will live a more healthier life, which means that they have a lower chance of being a subject-to obesity.
