In the United States, 38% of all fires are structure fires that take place inside of buildings. The most fatal type of fire are home fires, which account for 84% of all deaths as a result of a fire. You can greatly decrease the chance that your home sustains a fire and the chance that your family is harmed in a fire by implementing the fire safety tips below in your home this summer.

#1 Change Your Heating System

The first thing thing you need to do change out your heating system if you rely on space heaters to warm up your home during the winter time. According to the National Fire Protection Association, space heaters were used in 79% of the homes where a fatality occurred during a fire, despite only being used in about 32% of the homes in the United States. Using a space heater to warm up your home greatly increases your risk of fire and your risk of death associated with a fire. Summer is a great time to change out your heating system since you are not using it right now; by changing it out now, it will be ready when the nights start to get cool again.

#2 Add Fire Escapes

If your home has multiple stories, it is vital that you have a safe way out of every level in your home. If you don't have a safe way out of the upper levels of your home, contact a local contractor and see about having a fire escape installed that you can access through at least one room on every level. If you have multiple rooms in the upper levels in your home, you may want to consider installing multiple fire escapes.

If you already have fire escapes installed, take some time to check them or have a professional check them and make sure that they are sturdy and safe this summer.
