Coates begins the book, Between the World and Me by writing a letter style format addressed it to his son. Throughout the book Coates addresses many problems he had as a child and the struggles he faced as an African American man growing up in America. He argues that using race is an invalid idea and that it is used in the context of racism. Coates book begins with him telling a story about a past interview and how he believed America was founded on racism and slavery. Coates feels that because he is black he still carries around violence, racism and the remembrance of slavery with him. Coates says that “but race is the child of racism, not the father” (7). Keeper’n Me, an award-winning book by Richard Wagamese, introduces an exclusive perspective into the way the Indigenous peoples see the world around them. The author gives his own unique narrative, partly based on his own experiences as an Ojibway hailing from the Wabaseemoong First Nation in Northwestern Ontario. In addition to writing Medicine Walk, Dream Wheels, Ragged Company, and Indian Horse, the 59-year-old author, born in 1955, has been recognized with numerous awards. Notably, Wagamese accepted the 2012 National Aboriginal Achievement Award for Media & Communications and the 2013 Canada Council on the Arts Molson Prize. The novel Keeper’n Me was written by Richard Wagamese and first published in 1994. It was later published in Canada in 2006. The novel is about a man named Garnet Raven who was taken away from his parents and the Ojibway way of life when he was three, and put into various foster homes and forced into the white way of life. When he was around 20 he ended up doing something that got him thrown into jail. While in jail, Garnet received a letter from his Ojibway family and decided to return to his first home, White Dog, once he got out of jail. Once he returned to White Dog, Garnet started to learn many things from his family, friends, and a man named Keeper. He discovered a sense of place, and self, and started to make his way back into the Ojibway
In this passage from the novel Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates utilizes meaningful, vivid imagery to not only stress the chasm between two dissonant American realities, but to also bolster his clarion for the American people to abolish the slavery of institutional or personal bias against any background. For example, Coates introduces his audience to the idea that the United States is a galaxy, and that the extremes of the "black" and "white" lifestyles in this galaxy are so severe that they can only know of each other through dispatch (Coates 20-21). Although Coates's language is straightforward, it nevertheless challenges his audience to reconsider a status quo that has maintained social division in an unwitting yet ignorant fashion.
He believes that because of what past generations have endured and the lack of freedom that was given to blacks, they were not provided the same rights and were looked at as inferior human beings. Social matters, such as mass incarceration of blacks and the idea that black people are criminals, stem from the disparity between races as explained by Coates who emphasizes, “blacks who could not find work were labeled vagrants and sent to jail, where they were leased as labor to the very people who had once enslaved them” (Coates). The situation did not change even when they were freed from enslavement as blacks were not able to live the same as the white people. This reinforced blacks being inferior as they were not given the same opportunities as white people had. To this day, many black men looking for jobs struggle with the same disadvantages that existed years ago. They are targeted by the criminal justice system, and once they have a criminal history, it is hard for them to find jobs. Unfortunately, even with a clean record it is still difficult for black men to find jobs since, “the job market in America regards black men who have never been criminals as though they were” (Coates). Coates draws parallels between incarceration and slavery, but also provides explanation as to why minorities find themselves with certain unequal and employment

Nevertheless, when certain scholars think about and discuss race in society, they often take different approaches than those by Mills mentioned prior. However, regardless of the different approaches that may be taken, often times a common idea can be found amongst them, which further ties in The Racial Contract. For example, the text “Racial Formation in the United States” by Michael Omi and Howard Winant, as well as “The Lincoln-Douglass Debates” can both be found to have a correlation regarding race within Mill’s work. As can be observed through the historical events that have occurred over time, race can be seen as a simple idea, but rather it is not and can instead be seen as a complex topic of discussion with more intricacies than what may be originally exposed. In his text, Mills attempts to explain some of these intricacies by starting with the way that race has culminated itself through the happenings and changes that have developed historically in society.

As Coates states, “An America that looks away is ignoring not just the sins of the past but the sins of the present and the certain sins of the future.” he highlights the fact that when society chooses to ignore the discrimination of the past they choose to overlook the racial problems occurring today. Similar to Coates, Lydon’s film makes a similar argument when they explain that the biggest problem today is that individuals do not want to admit that a problem exists. This emphasizes their point that racism is embedded in our society because we choose to not take action against it. In the article, “A Letter My Son,” Ta-Nehisi Coates utilizes both ethical and pathetic appeal to address his audience in a personable manner. The purpose of this article is to enlighten the audience, and in particular his son, on what it looks like, feels like, and means to be encompassed in his black body through a series of personal anecdotes and self-reflection on what it means to be black. In comparison, Coates goes a step further and analyzes how a black body moves and is perceived in a world that is centered on whiteness. This is established in the first half of the text when the author states that,“white America’s progress, or rather the progress of those Americans who believe that they are white, was built on looting and violence,”
I was late for school, and my father had to walk me in to class so that my teacher would know the reason for my tardiness. My dad opened the door to my classroom, and there was a hush of silence. Everyone's eyes were fixed on my father and me. He told the teacher why I was late, gave me a kiss goodbye and left for work. As I sat down at my seat, all of my so-called friends called me names and teased me. The students teased me not because I was late, but because my father was black. They were too young to understand. All of this time, they thought that I was white, because I had fare skin like them, therefore I had to be white. Growing up having a white mother and a black father was tough. To some people, being black and white is a contradiction in itself. People thought that I had to be one or the other, but not both. I thought that I was fine the way I was. But like myself, Shelby Steele was stuck in between two opposite forces of his double bind. He was black and middle class, both having significant roles in his life. "Race, he insisted, blurred class distinctions among blacks. If you were black, you were just black and that was that" (Steele 211).
