Creative Thinking and Problem Solving Creative thinking can be defined as unorthodox thinking. It’s a process of discovery that will allow one to gain insight to problems and therefore allows for effective ways of problem solving. For instance: in the movie at 26 minutes a car without a driver goes past which shows the result of creative thinking. It may have been created to limit accidents which therefore solves a problem creatively. An example of this type of thinking can be seen at 22 minutes in, during Billy and Nick’s interview where they are posed with a question of what would they do if they were shrunken down to the size of a nickel and placed in a blender. Therefore at 1 hour 44 minutes when Billy returns after Nick spoke to him at the old age home, the team then gain a competitive advantage by having him and Nick and their sales skills which not many possess. This then allows them to convince the store owner to advertise with Google which then allows for them to win the challenge and overall competition. This also solves Nick and Billy’s unemployment issue. Obstacles to creative thinking Many believe there is only one correct answer and are therefore too afraid to suggest their answers which limits creativity. However, at 1 hour 21 minutes, Nick suggested a creative solution during a lesson which made others such as Dana see things differently which could make things easier for people. Force Field Analysis This analysis is a tool that helps people and businesses make decisions by looking at the pros and cons and weighing them out to see which has more points. The problem is defined and general questions are asked to gain a better understanding of the problem. More in-depth questions are asked and based on these questions a common ground will be achieved so that a decision can be agreed upon. Experts will then be able to act on their findings which will help deal with risks and opportunities. An advantage of this is that it allows for a number of experts to be called upon which gives a wider range of views and opinions. A disadvantage is that this process is time consuming and requires participant commitment which may be difficult to achieve. Nominal Group This technique is a structured brainstorming method where the problem is defined and each member of the group writes down their ideas in a set time. Members then state their ideas aloud which are discussed and different opinions are gathered about each idea and a conclusion is decided upon based on an idea having the best responses. An advantage would be that a number of ideas are generated so that the best one can be decided upon. A disadvantage would be that it is time consuming as only one problem can be dealt with at a time.
