The basic duties of a probation officer is to meet with the offenders they have been assigned to anywhere from once a week to once a month, this will continue until the offender has reached the end of their probation. The court will make the recommendations that will allow the offender to be put on probation and will also make a ruling as to how often the offender will report. When the offender goes to meet with his/her probation officer, the probation officer will go over the files and review the stipulations of one’s probation. Parole officers make it their job to work with the criminals and offenders they are assigned to ensure they do not re-offend and offer them a helping hand with adjusting back into society as they previously functioned. Parole officers will work closely with criminals; they will be the ones who will supervise them all after they do finally get released from prison. A parole officer has roles that are quite different from a probation officer, a probation officer over sees people whom are placed on probation, while a parole officer will be working with people who are coming from a prison setting; both positions mainly require the officers to perform the same duties and be educated with the same skills. If I was to become a probation officer, one thing I would want to be is efficient, and successful. There would be several things I would try to focalize my attention on; supervision in communities, and its importance. Probation officers have very complex, and hard job; but if done with the right intentions, and the will to help people you can help change people’s lives.

The main goal of parole is to rehabilitate the offenders and guide them back into society while decreasing the likelihood of recidivism. Generally, parole is granted after the offenders have served a portion of their sentence. While probation is an alternative way of sentencing or granted after a percentage of the sentence is served (Parole & Probation, 2013). There are terms and conditions that parolees must agree to when released, such as staying within state or county lines, passing drug and alcohol tests, and providing proof of residence and employment. The parolee’s parole will be revoked if he or she violates the conditions and return to prison.

While the role of a correctional officer is very crucial within a prison, depending on the unique role to a specific location, it is important that we understand that these humble and quiet guardians are in the correction facilities. Between the different criminal justice facilities, the mission and goals between them are vastly different, although there is very little contrast in the roles that correctional officers play in these facilities.
