Australian Health and Social Care Systems Assignment 1. Introduction This report will be focusing on the mental health of prisoners, particularly those who are entering prison. Mental health is often defined as a state of wellbeing in which an individual realises their own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to contribute to their community ("WHO | Mental health: a state of well-being", 2017). Upon entering prison, the first aspect of health provision that is in place to remove this that the prisoners have to undergo a physical assessment that is conducted by a qualified justice health nurse ("Health care - Corrections, Prisons & Parole Victoria", 2017), the physical assessment touches on any current prescribed medications, health issues and their past medical history which can help reduce some of the issues associated with the delays in communication between the prison and the community. The second aspect that the prisoners have to undergo is a very brief mental health examination that assesses for any current mental illnesses and any immediate risk to the prisoner in regard to self-harm and suicide ("Health care - Corrections, Prisons & Parole Victoria", 2017). If any concerns are found within this brief mental health assessment the prisoner will be closely monitored and therefore will help remove the issue of increased mental instability that has occurred due the delays in communication (Elliott, …show more content…

The issue will be better addressed in the fictitious health service as all new prisoners will undergo a full psychiatric examination upon entering the prison and then continuous assessments every three months following for their first year in prison and every after that depending on their convictions. The prisoners will also be able to directly access an in-house psychologist to be able to express their feelings and concerns and to be provided with advice on how to deal/maintain their mental health illness or issues whilst in prison. This method will potentially allow the prisoners to have support there to access immediately without having to go through the long referral system that is currently being provided in most prisons throughout
