A. Principal’s Knowledge of Special Education Curriculum
It is imperative that a principal be familiar with special education and curriculum and know the laws governing special education students. Children with disabilities have the right to free and appropriate public education and a principal must make sure that these students’ educational needs are being met. When a principal knows the law, he can hire the best teachers and support staff, determine if the curriculum in the special education class is best for the school’s special education population and monitor the special education program to be certain the laws under Section 504, IDEA and ADA are being adhered to. If a principal does not have knowledge of these laws, the school could be out of compliance with the laws and this could lead to problems for the school and the district. A principal who has understands the needs of the special education population in his school will be a proactive advocate for these students.

I believe in education for all students. Therefore, I will be an advocate for our special education students. I am also a supportive type of leader. This means that I believe it is my responsibility to stay current on educational law and share that knowledge with staff.
