Every year, 50 million students attend a public or private school for around 180 days. As a result of so many kids going to a specific place every single day, relationships are made and broken, stress levels decrease for a while and suddenly spike over the next paper or exam, but worst of all some are experiencing a terrifying nightmare: an active shooter.
Iowa schools are not prepared for the shootings happening around the country. There are several things some schools have put in place to help prevent these harmful events or lessen the damage it causes that our schools need to take into consideration. Through a study over 37 school based violent incidents the Website “Campus Safety Magazine” says that before these harmful incidents occurred 71% of the attackers felt bullied, persecuted even attacked. In these cases most of the incidents seemed caused by a bully situation which in return means that if we can some way decrease the bullying within schools and boost the positive and uplifting atmosphere, school violence and even worse shooting could decrease immensely. Multiple examples of this are found on an ebscohost article called “Making Schools Safe” lead by the group FCCLA or Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. In one of the examples from Front Royal, Virginia, FCCLA members wanted to establish a more harmonious school atmosphere by helping the students realize that having a negative attitude spreads throughout the school, creating stress and a surge of disrespect toward staff, students and teachers (Riordan). In conclusion, with the help of groups like FCCLA and student lead preventions, the environment within the school could dramatically change for the better, allowing kids to get an education safely and maybe even in a fun …show more content…

Even the smallest addition might add time to contact law enforcement while in a dangerous situation involving an intruder. In result of the Sandy Hook Attack, schools have adapted the paper-based and computerized visitor management systems allowing even some systems to scan the national sew offender database (Atlas). Another example of an addition, is a single entry point. Being able to monitor everything and everyone that enters the building is very important. Most schools have already established this but some still lack this
