Preventing School Shooting Essay

In Parkland, Florida on February 14, 2018 a former student went on a shooting rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School leaving 17 dead and 14 injured. The shooter, identified as 19 year old Nikolas Cruz was armed with countless magazines and an AR-15. Cruz was arrested a short distance from the school near a home. Cruz started outside of the school shooting and made his way inside the school and through the hallways. He wore a gas mask and used smoke grenades to try and get children out into the hallways so that he could shoot more people. No I don’t think that the shooting was preventable. School shooters are nearly always isolated in some way from others. Or they are angry or feel rejected. There has been research done by the Secret Service Threat Assessment center that shoes that bullying in some way has led the target to want revenge and to play out their aggressions at school. I think that school security isn’t enough. I think that we should worry more about preventing school shootings rather than preparing for them. Although not all the students from the Florida shooting were harmed physically, they were psychologically harmed. My theory on how to help prevent school shootings is to have programs in the community and in schools to focus on student’s mental wellness. More money needs to be spent by staffing schools with mental health support staff and offering training to all the teachers in violence prevention and emotional learning. People are talking about increasing the gun presence in schools with teachers but that money could be spent improving prevention services. There should be a range of interventions available for behavior problems. A young person needs to learn how to use social skills to respond to a hard situation rather than an aggressive
