Also, during this decade cornerstones of our present-day military were established. The process of calling up citizens for service, similar to the draft, was established by The Militia Acts of 1792. The first Act passed provided the president the power to call up the militia from the states, "whenever the United States shall be invaded, or be in imminent danger of invasion from any foreign nation or Indian tribe". The second Act passed a few days later, providing for the organization of the state militias.
