My skin matches the hero, likeness, the image.” The American Dreams is a set of ideals which surround the creation of The Unites States and the idea that hard work leads to success. But this mind-set fails the take into account the discrimination and difficulties minorities face. If you’re born white, you are automatically given a head start and an advantage over people of colour. Children are accustomed to this very true reality at a young age. When looking at a super hero movie, they are more often than not portrayed as a white person. A few examples are Thor, Captain America, Superman, and the list goes on. Black Lives Matter is only a continuation of this in the modern day. They are “taking the torch” from where the 1960s Civil Rights Movement left off. A large part of this movement is the idea of intersectionality and how different identities can overlap. It is much more then a movement about only racism, it focuses on issues concerning prejudice.

“I think one of the critical questions for white people in this society is what are you willing to risk, what are you willing to sacrifice to create a more just society?”
Progress won’t be made until the people in positions of social power acknowledge the struggles of people who are being systematically oppressed. People of the majority have to be willing to help the minority. During the Civil Rights Movement, white people were making themselves targets, by simply standing up for Blacks in America. You have to be able to put aside those impeding thoughts like Macklemore hits on his first verse.

Maybe racism is not a literal mental illness that can be diagnosed, but there are many ways in which one can associate the two
