There are some very magnificent things in the world. There also many horrible things. Prejudice can easily be classified as something terrible and awful. Prejudice is found just about everywhere in the world. There is prejudice against colored people, religions, overweight people and many others as well. But how does one form such perspective of prejudice towards others? A person's experiences can change their perspective on prejudice as well as how they view the world and everybody else around them. In the book The Help by Kathryn Stockett, Skeeter Phelan has many experiences that change her perspective on prejudice. Skeeter's memory of Constantine being with her as a mother figure in her years at home before she went to college showed her that the help weren't just maids or people to look down on. Skeeter chose to write a book soon after she came back from college. This led to Skeeter getting close to Minny and Aibileen as well as learning about their jobs, their employers and their lives. Skeeter started to really care about her new friends now that she had spent so much time with and was starting to understand them. The other white women in Jackson thought of the help as inferior to themselves since that was what they had learned from their mothers. Skeeter had changed that view of the help for herself and for some of the other white women that read her book. Richard Wright wrote Black Boy as an autobiography showing his experiences and perspectives. Richard learned to hate white people through his negative experiences. The white men had taken his job at the optometrist, forced him to fight Harrison and killed Uncle Hoskins. Most of the characters in Crash changed the way they thought of others and were able to change their perspective on prejudice. All of these characters have had many different experiences that shaped their perspective on prejudice as well as how they view the world and everybody else around them. Wright found the motivation and inspiration to write Black Boy through the relationships he had with his family and friends, the influence of folk art and famous authors of the early 1900s, and mistreatment of blacks in the South and uncomfortable racial barriers.

One form of prejudice is racism. Racism is negative attitudes and values held by people about other people based on their race. It is this attitude which causes one to discriminate against another. Prejudice is the attitude of conveying negative stereotypes to a particular group, usually known as the out-groups. Usually the stereotypes are generalizations based on superficial opinions, so they have an invalid connotation behind it. Stereotypes in some cases evoke prejudice mindsets, leading to discriminate a certain ethnic group, age group, religion, seuxal orienntation, or body size. Black Boy is a denunciation of racism and his conservative, austere family. As a child growing up in the South, Richard Wright faced constant pressure to submit to white authority, as well as to his family’s violence. However, even from an early age, Richard had a spirit of rebellion. His refusal of punishments earned him harder beatings. Had he been weaker amidst the racist South, he would not have succeeded as a writer.

In the story “The Help” written by Kathryn Stockett, we are taken back in time to Jackson, Mississippi in August of 1962, where we meet three women by the name of Aibileen, Minny and Skeeter. Aibileen and Minny are black women who work for white families as the help. Skeeter is a young white woman in her early twenties who befriends the other two and gets them to tell their stories of what it is like to be the help. They reluctantly hesitate, but eventually give in knowing that the stories they are telling are more important than the negative impact it could have on their lives. While reading “ The Help” you cannot help but notice the symbolism that drips from almost every page.
In the book West Side Story by Arthur Laurents there were many prejudices. Prejudice is a favoring or dislike of something without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge. There were prejudices in West Side Story that had to do with the types of people, their races and sex. Prejudice can be caused because of various reasons. Religion, ethnic race and social status are examples of causes of prejudice. Sometimes prejudice is caused by how we are raised. Many times parents pass on prejudice beliefs to their children. A lot people raised in the southern part of the country are prejudice against blacks. In the early to mid 1960’s, prejudice was alive and well in the south. Blacks had their own bathrooms and were forced to ride in the back of city busses. It’s hard to believe that was doing on only 40 years ago. A lot of Middle Eastern countries are very prejudice against women.
