In the pre-presidential candidacy fog, Steve Breen, a Pulitzer Prize winning author, publishes a cartoon about the GOP or Republican Party. This cartoon is meant to inform potential voters to of the GOP’s view on Latino’s, and of how this view is affecting their voter base in Latino groups. The small cartoon is split right down the middle with a very tall brick wall, which separates an elephant figure, wearing a GOP political badge, from a man that represents the Latino voters. It puts an emphasis on how ambivalent the man is that the wall is there, yet it also stresses how the elephant is truly stressed out about this, by the drops of sweat coming off of his face. This cartoon implies that the man built the wall to keep the elephant away.
The first cartoon is with Theodore Roosevelt wearing hunting gear and holding a gun. There’s bull sitting on the moon reading the newspaper. There are different names for this political cartoon, like don’t shoot, I’ll come down, the beef trust and et cetera. This cartoon was made when TR was “trust busting” small corporations. After Jungle by Upton Sinclair, people and TR wanted changed. So changes were made and the Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1907, which made sure that inspections are made before meats are processed and ready to be delivered.
Deriving from the Dutch word “karton” and the Italian word “cartone,” a cartoon is “ a form of two dimensional illustrated visual art” (toonsmag). A cartoon can typically range from being a child’s pastime to going as far as confronting the socioeconomic and political issues in a country. People known as editorial cartoonists draw these cartoons, often called political or editorial cartoons, using tools such as hyperbole, artistic proficiency, and satire in order to poke fun at and inform the public about a certain issue. One famous editorial cartoonist who is known for his cartoonist is Gary Markstein. “The Iraq Surge”, one of Markstein’s lesser-known works, and the “Five years in Iraq” both deal with the Iraq War. The Latino Generation: Voices of the New America is a book written by Mario T. Garcia. This book tells the individual life stories of individual Latino Americans all attending the same class at University of California, Santa Barbra. The book discloses stories and events told by 13 students each who narrate from first person and give us a brief description of their life. The book is composed of 13 sections with an additional introduction and conclusion (Garcia, Kindle). Within this reflection I will describe the key points within this book and compare the stories within this book not only to each other, but also to additional stories of Latino Americans and how Garcia’s book rids the general public of misconception of Latinos.
The Latino Threat is a concept of an imposing threat of the Latino, whether they be from Mexico or any other Latin country, and how they affect the U.S. and its citizens. This concept is described heavily Leo R. Chavez’ book aptly titled The Latino Threat. In the book, he describes how the Latino threat as a concept has been used routinely to underline the aspect of United States citizenship in a tit for tat manner; that being dehumanizing the Latino to raise the standing of U.S. citizenship. The U.S. as a nation believes it should feel better about itself because it is the one that turns people away rather than being the place where people run from. The utilization of ethos is clever since the audience is able to understand the cartoonist's talent; however, they are reassured that he is a credible source because he abides by the same laws they do as citizens. He stays consistent with his artistic style, enforcing it to communicate a truth that Congress has hidden from its constituents. The picture reveals that the far left and right sides of the building remain intact. The audience can decipher the hidden truth of illegal funding taking place in Congress from private organizations which elucidates why these sides of the building received no damage. Accordingly, the spectators can consider his political cartoon important through ethos. The craftsman of this artistic creation appears properly understood and provides a variety of solid dimensions which are exhibited in the drawing, and he does not emerge as a novice because of his experience in the art of presentation. The believability of the political case is exponential along these lines; the audience can believe the author’s position important without being informed about his previous knowledge in
PBS Frontline’s documentary, Immigration Battle, produced and directed by Shari Robertson and Michael Camerini (2015), portrays the life and death of the immigration reform bill. The film initially follows Rep. Gutiérrez who advocates the immigration reform bill that would give millions of undocumented immigrants an opportunity to become U.S. citizens. In this installment of Harvest of Empire, we reach the third and final chapter named La Cosecha which shows the impact of Latinos in politics. Though, the two previous sections were interesting due to learning history and the history of Gonzalez himself, in this section we learn of the triumphs and downfalls of communities that were aren’t made aware of in modern textbooks or in classrooms. Immigration has always been an issue in the United States, which is often portrayed as harmful and as major threat to American culture. As a result, various anti immigration policies have been aimed against immigrants in order to prevent and preserve the miscegenation of American culture, such as English only policies. Among the largest minority groups in the U.S, are Latinos who currently compose of 15% of the U.S population (Delgado and Stefancic 3). Unfortunately, Latinos have been accused of taking American benefits, jobs, and have wrongfully been depicted as a result of not assimilating to American culture. Latinos are often accused of resisting assimilation, but what has failed to be acknowledged is that there are obstacles set in place that are preventing Latinos from completely assimilating. Among those greatest obstacles there is discrimination. Institutional as well as individual discrimination have prevented many Latinos from feeling a sense of belonging. As a result Latinos have been reluctant to assimilate. Another major component is proximity. Many Latinos are native to nearby countries which allows for easy communication with family members as well as their culture. Moreover, it also allows for a constant influx of immigrants that replenish and preserve Latino cultures and traditions in the U.S. Lastly, Latino movements are working diligently to promote unity among communities for the purpose of creating a sense of identity and pride amongst Latinos, such as the Chicano movement.
The people of Latino ethnicity influence education, communications, media and history in America. It is an essential contribution given by the population in many areas that affect every American in some way shape or form. “This emerging generation tends to be bilingual and bicultural. By 2050, about one third of the U.S. population is expected to be Latino. With those rising numbers comes more influence. In this political cartoon we clearly see a call to the National Recovery Administration (NRA) after taking into consideration the fact that it was created by Jim Morin in direct correlation to the shooting at the movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. We can see that this was made to mock the United States Government and its lack of initiative in resolving the tragedy that occurred. The man with the NRA hat is clearly controlling the government as they say that “we…will do nothing about it,” showing their strong influence over the nation’s leaders and their authority.
