Teaching the specialized subjects like Math, Science, Physics and chemistry requires practical work for understanding the topics easily. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of practical work on students learning at higher secondary school. It may be helpful, though, to start with some general interpretation about learning to put down the structure for the conversation later on in the paper.
Learning is a term which is used in every field of educational research. It is considered as acquiring of information, knowledge from different experiences that comes in our life. In Science, learners do practical work to enlarge their information with an effort to understand the world around them (Kolucki & Lemish, 2011). It actually develops learners' power of understanding of thoughts, theories and models (Millar & Abrahams, 2008). Thus, teaching science engage learners experiencing the basic and incorporated processes of science (NARST, 1990; Millar et al. 1999). Research has recognized that accomplishment of skills improved when students are taught science subjects like biology, physics and chemistry by using practical work (Kerr, 1963; Turpin & Cage, 2004; Aladejana & Aderibigbe, 2007; Watts, 2013). On the other hand, it observed that practical work is not done in some schools due to insufficient or scarce resources. Therefore, learners were not looked so competitive in large classes of science (pers. Obs) and (Onwu & Stoffel, 2005; Ramnarain, 2014). To make sure about the equal treatment in various schools, curricula recommend the levels and the number of practical work as well as succeeding assessments. “The Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement” (CAPS) guides teachers that on what content they are advised to teach, describes the number of practical sessions and the complication of practical work for Grades 10-12 in South African schools (CAPS, 2012). I noticed from all the capable people I know that their skills were acquired through hard work, their passion for what they do, and years of experience in their trade or profession. I can 't think of anyone who is born with skills. If you come across people who achieved certain results due to natural ability than hard work, there 's a good chance that hard work has been invested. For example, when I was in school, there were students who seem to breeze through tests and get great results. What a lot of people don 't know is that behind the great results were extra hours spent on self-studying and hours of private tuition that their parents put them through. Another example: when I worked in a research firm, there were people who stood out above others. These were the same people who invested extra time to get their skills right.
Psychologists have preformed many studies and proposed many theories regarding learning. Learning can be defined as a relatively permanent change in behavior that is due to past experience.
Learning is referred as moderately continuous alteration in behaviour which is the outcome of experience. Learning became a key center of study in psychology throughout the beginning of the twentieth century ever since behaviourism developed as a huge school of thought (cited in Schaffer, 1996). Learning therefore is a significantly crucial notion in areas of psychology such as: cognitive development, developmental psychology, educational development and social development.
Learning is the attainment of new information or knowledge, skills, or responses from experience that causes a fairly permanent change in behavior. There are several ways that a person or animal can learn, but no one theory is solely responsible for how they learn.
I believe that learning is a journey that both child and educator set out on together. This journey is a privilege that I take seriously, realizing that a child’s early years are a key formative time in their life. I believe that it is during this time that important foundations are being set in place that will not only impact them in the present but will also influence them later on in life.
In the book Outliers, and in the articles, “Meaningful Work”, “Do, Just, Do: A Journey to Meaningful, Satisfying work”, and “ You Wont Find Meaningful work Looking Outside Yourself”, The authors Malcolm Gladwell, Michael F. Steger, Lori Deschene, and Keven wood describe what the joy of meaningful is to them.Life is what you make of it and it’s and up to you to decide what you will get out of it. Some people may work eight hour shifts Monday through Friday miserable, exhausted, depressed, unhappy, and under a lot of pressure and stress from their jobs. Others may do the same, similar, or different jobs being comfortable, happy with life, and pleased with their job position. Your job should be one of the most important things to you because you are there on average forty hours a week and most of your time is spent there. It should be important that you enjoy what you do because it is practically your second home. Meaningful work is a job you enjoy doing, are compassionate about, never tired of, and do for the fulfillment of yourself , it is important to success because if one enjoys what they do opportunities in their career path will only expand.
Learning has given different definitions depending on the context in which it is used. Some individual have define it as any experience which changes the behavior of an individual. Moreover, Learning is all about how experiences affect the subsequent behavior of an individual. Learning theorists have some mechanisms to explain the consequences of experience on behavior change. However, human beings are flexible to adapt to environmental changes. They can learn from their environmental changes.
Learning is the process of attaining knowledge that can be obtained in a variety of ways. People learn through their own personal experiences, others experiences, actions, and by being taught. According to Webster dictionary, learning is an activity or a process of gaining knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, and being taught. As humans, we crave to learn about how we came about, our surrounding, and the role we play in our surroundings. To gain such knowledge, it is important to work on specific leaning goals that is tailored toward the person. In my case, the goal was having a better understanding about social factors and social circumstances.
I have ensured that I meet my students’ science needs by assuring that the material needed to be cover in the class was covered. Furthermost, the students are able to learn from exploring, which is different from teaching the students how to and giving them the information needed. The students were still able to learn the material needed to be covered by discovering the content.
I define learning as a process by which I help students to acquire knowledge and skills through instruction.
