Teenage Wasteland by Anne Tyler is about the dysfunctional relationship of Daisy Coble, her troubled son, Donny, and his tutor, Cal Beadle. Instead of helping Donny with his academic career like Daisy hoped, Cal only taught Donny to disobey authority and rebel against people “with power”. In the end, Donny is expelled from his private school and is sent to public school, and then he just suddenly abandons his old home. Nobody knows where he went or why he even ran away from home.

His grades were very bad and he wasn’t known to be a good student in class. He was described as, “ noisy,disruptive, always fooling around with his friends”. When his mother was notified about this, although her help was limited, it seemed to help him for a little bit, but then he fell back into same place as he was before. Donny was set up with a tutor, by the name of Cal. Cal was not the type of tutor any parent would intentionally set their child up with. He encouraged the child to rebel against authority. He criticized every attempt Donny's mother made to help her child. Donny unsurprisingly enjoyed the sessions with Cal. At the end of the story Donnys tutor was dropped and Donny was sent to a new school. His grades began to look better, but after a few months he disappeared. Being a student of Del Norte High school, Susan McConnell (the protagonist) encounters some difficulties and joy after she finally gets accepted in the “popular” herd. These upside and downsides turn into major themes which are incorporated during the course of the book. The major themes that are developed inside the book are: peer pressure/manipulation, psychopaths, conscience/guilt.
PTSD, also known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, can cause change and bring about pain and stress in many different forms to the families of the victims of PTSD. These changes can be immense and sometimes unbearable. PTSD relates to the characters relationship as a whole after Henry returns from the army and it caused Henry and Lyman’s relationship to crumble. Then there is the indigenous culture that personifies the land. They see the earth as an entity that they have made a bond with; a bond that now lay broken. While Daisy’s responsibility in her family is very small and separated, Ma’s responsibilities are very vital to her family. In The Great Gatsby, Daisy didn’t have any real responsibilities. Her basic role in life was to play the “happy trophy wife” for Tom. She is almost a possession of his, like a new car. A perfect example of Daisy’s role in her family is when she is first introduced, “The only completely stationary object in the room was an enormous couch on which two young women were buoyed up…The other girl, Daisy, made an attempt to rise – she leaned slightly forward with a conscientious expression – then she laughed,” (Fitzgerald, 2008). During the confrontation between Gatsby and Tom Buchanan about Daisy, she is talked about like she is a possession to be won over. During the argument Nick “glances at Daisy who was staring terrified between Gatsby and her husband” (Fitzgerald, page 143). Gatsby and Buchanan tell Daisy what to say instead of allowing her to tell her own truths, and if she does start to speak up for herself she is quickly quieted down. Daisy states at the beginning of the novel while talking about finding out the sex of her child that, “I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool – that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool” (Fitzgerald, page 16). Daisy is the only female character in the novel who understands that no matter what a woman accomplishes, she will always be downcasted based on her gender. This outlook is what allows her to be controlled by Gatsby and Buchanan, because she doesn’t believe that anything she can do will make her more of a human to them. Myrtle on the other hand, while still a married woman, isn’t able to see her powerlessness. She feels powerful enough to stand up to Tom and chant Daisy’s name over and over again until he breaks her nose (Fitzgerald, page 37). The choices that Daisy faces in the last few chapters are what really decide the fate of the novel. When Jay and Tom face off, Daisy is the central figure of focus. Being males, both Tom and Jay aggressively fight over who should live with Daisy. Daisy finally breaks and says, ‘Please, Tom! I can’t stand this anymore.’ (Fitzgerald 135). Daisy loses her temper because she can not decide on what to do. During the roaring twenties, women start to get more and more privileges that men already have, this includes the choice of leaving your current husband. Boykin uses the feminist theory by saying, ‘Daisy’s confusion over her relationships with the two principal men in her life reflects the gender confusion that was rampant during Fitzgerald’s era’ (Boykin 22). This example by Boykin directly explains the importance of women in the novel. If in the end, Daisy choses Jay over Tom, the outcome of the story would be completely different, Jay would not have died because Daisy would have never left the hotel in haste, therefore preventing Myrtle’s death.
