Power and manipulation are tools some people use to take advantage of others. In George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm, this strategy is proven throughout the book. In the book, the animals rebel against Mr. Jones, the owner. However, in the end, the animals realize freedom is not what it seems. Animal Farm represents actions that took place during the Russian Revolution. In the novel, the animals Snowball, Napoleon, Squealer uses manipulation to control the other animals on the farm just as Leon Trotsky, Joseph Stalin, and the propaganda department of Lenin’s government used manipulation to control people during the Russian Revolution.

Snowball and Leon Trotsky were both idealistic leaders, however, they both showed manipulation skills to get control. In Animal Farm, Snowball came up with the idea that the pigs should eat the apples and drink the milk that they took away from the animals for their own brainpower. In the book, Napoleon revises the Seven Commandments through Squealer to allow the pigs to have more freedom since they were considered the smarter comrades. Joseph Stalin becomes acquainted with Lev Kamenev and George Zinoviev so they can run out Trotsky and make his reputation look bad. Napoleon made the animals fear him by using the guard dogs. If one of the animals stepped out of line Napoleon’s guard dogs would kill him on the spot. Furthermore, Joseph Stalin used manipulation to take control over Vladimir Lenin’s party, after he died. Once, Stalin had the power he executed potential enemies or he sent them to camps. Both of the leaders use of manipulation was not fair for the opposite parties, nonetheless it was clever and it worked.
