2 Potential Causes for learning problems:
The first potential cause for learning problems is the problem with how most of the non-medical school bound students do not see the attainment and intrinsic value in taking the course. Accroding to the Unit 8 power point slides, “Attainment value is the importance of doing well on the task for your self-concept” and “intrinsic value is the enjoyment one gets from the activity” (Lundeen, 2016). Given that the course is a general educational requirement there is some level of extrinsic value and/or cost belief of seeing the course as being useful in meeting their future goal of graduating or doing something besides medical school. (00) Another method of insuring fairness and trust is for the instructor to have available time for their students via office hours throughout the semester and have an examination review guide for them. In their lower division they were able to get through their examinations that only required rote learning in the form memorizing terminology for a multiple choice exam. Dembo and Seli state that self regulation of the social environment as “ the ability to determine when one needs to work alone or with a group, to seek out help when needed from instructors or help from nonsocial souraces such as reference material (pg. 191)” Returning students may find it useful to have a study group as a method of learning course material but also creating a support group on campus with other returning students.
Time management: Returning students may have full time jobs and familial commitments that might conflict with attending review sessions, office hours, or joining a study group. If a student does not know how to plan a paper or study for a text in sections weeks prior to a test, can cause cramming or failure to study at all. Dembo and Seli state, “time management is to ensure that we complete all of our important tasks each day and not simply to manage time” (p. 148).
