The Effect of French Colonization
As discussed above, one of the more detrimental effects of French Colonization was that the poor farmers of Northern Senegal were forced into and oppressive economic system which left them in unmanageable poverty. The agricultural effects that colonization had on Senegalese farming was the desertification of the delicate Sahel soil and as a result, famine that lasted through the 20th century (Source card 8). Just an example, some of the few in Senegal who do have access to the internet; their email address’ all are based from a French domain. The country 's economy is in shambles and still today a massive part of their economy is imports and foreign aid. There are still no factories to help process Senegalese farmer’s biggest product the groundnut (source card 9). Despite what was mentioned before, Senegal has made some pretty serious growth since its time as a colony. For example, sustainable irrigation and other innovative agricultural methods have been introduced that slow the desertification of the northern farmlands. Also farmers are starting to find new crops that can be planted in Senegal. An example of this is in the town of Ross Bethio. There, rice farmers have implemented sustainable irrigation and today can produce enough grain to feed their own families with plenty leftover to distribute to the rest of Senegal. However, the lack of proper infrastructure continues continues to make spreading products around the country a serious challenge. While the Senegalese still feel the bonds of French colonialism, with the help of their strong cultural identity, have assumed sovereignty over Senegal and have slowly started to become more and more self-sufficient, increasing the country 's utility as a
