Reconstruction began throughout the nation, but mostly in the South following the civil war in 1863. It had many widely positive and negative consequences within the period. These consequences were felt both short term and long term, for the North and the South. This in return would ultimately lead to the end of the Reconstruction period with many questioning its success. In this essay I will compare and contrast the many sides of the Reconstruction period felt for both the North and the South. The steady Presidential changes as they changed throughout the Reconstruction period. To the corruption of government that also had a long term effect on the Reconstruction period. The freedoms of blacks as they fought to retain them in a new and unsettling
The corruption that tried to create a new form of Government that often mishandled the rights to uphold blacks newly found freedoms within the south and parts of the north. This mishandling of rights leads the South to create a much separated and segregated hatred viewpoint that had lasting effects well into the 1960’s. It also leads to Johnson having to veto and block many of the Radical laws that were being passed. Congress had disagreed with President Andrew Johnson about being lenient on the south and wanted to set forth another plan on the South which was much harsher. This may have ultimately been one the final points to his impeachment. This also led to the creation of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to be added to the constitution. Officially ending slavery, making all black people citizens with the rights to be protected, and the right to vote regardless of race. These laws lead to a long term consequence and a positive good for the latter future of the black population who would have to turn to them in 1960 when fighting for freedom
The same could be seen in the political end of government. Yes both sides were now united in a way to form one government , yet in a way the South still licking its wounds was looking for a way around the new bonded government. The South was in much need of a rebuilt as most of it was destroyed in the war. Many found themselves to be broke and starting over again as the confederate money they possessed was now worthless. Due to this harsh economic need to rebuild and gain money again the south did fold and set forth to follow the laws and rejoin the Union. The long term and expected consequence were the rebuilding of farms and roads throughout the nation. While the North also had areas of damage not as severe as the South was in need of repairs and rebuilt. Both areas found themselves facing a compromise to accept and forgive the other side and mend their judgement to do away with the party line of prejudice of North and South. This was necessary for any long term plan to keep the union
